Samsung Developers event

Samsung is bringing in some heavy hitters tonight for a 4+ hr developer training session: http://samsungdevus.com/events/samsung-developers-office-hours-chicago Just curious if any other BT users will be attending? I'll be there with a group of other Chicago Android devs from @ 1871. It's like a mini Samsung WWDC. I was just over there helping with some set-up. Pretty scenic spot up on the 80th floor. It's gonna be packed, they are anticipating 400+ attendees. FREE Giveaways and FREE Drinks/Food!

A sorta TLDR wrap-up of the event. I’m still amazed there no other BT folks in attendance (?) They planned this event for 300 and had 500+ show up. The main goal of the event was to introduce the Samsung Mobile SDK and show you what you can build with it. They brought a couple of veteran programmers and they walked us thru building some basic apps with some of these new features. These are the things you see in their new TV commercial where they show the Galaxy Note and watching YouTube while having the Note app running simultaneously. True Multitasking on the screen, which iOS is yet to achieve. If you want to get into developing Android apps with these new features like Multi Window, Gesture, SPen and Chord – sign up and check out some of their sample projects. I was amazed how easy it was to build a simple MultiWindow app. Just a few lines of code in your manifest and your app is Multi Window capable. http://developer.samsung.com/samsung-mobile-sdk You can access their remote test lab devices there too. I've used it in the past and it's gotten noticibly faster IMO. Another presenter was Immersion who introduced their Haptics SDK. Haptics is technology to try and add actual feel to your app. They demoed a Guitar app and when you ‘strummed’ the strings, you could feel the device vibrate and resonate much like a real guitar. It’s like the Android vibrate function on steroids. Very interesting and cutting edge stuff. More here: http://www.immersion.com/ http://blog.immersion.com/2012/10/video-tutorial2/ The first giveaway of the night was from Dice+ who gave out 300 of these developer kits in hopes of getting feedback and ideas from mobile developers. http://dicepl.us/ This is a really interesting device. The main things they touted about this technology was a) They believe this is the first piece of modern. mobile technology designed to be THROWN. b) They believe that serious gamers don’t trust randomness in programs. They claim dice+ is completely random and should appeal to this segment of developers. It’s a cool little toy. It has BLE and features in it similar to the TI Sensor Tag kit. Can’t wait to explore the SDK and test mine out. http://www.developers.dicepl.us/users/sign_in The last giveaway was by MHL – which is a newer standard for HDMI and Mobile devices. This is a device that connects and broadcasts your phone on a HDTV. There is no lag time – that cable they touted transfers around 700MBPS+. It also charges your phone while in use. They showed us lots of places MHL is in use currently like Smart TV’s and Cars. They know mobile is moving to the big screen. http://venturebeat.com/2013/01/21/dock-your-smartphone-into-your-car-display-with-mhl-wiring/ I scored one of these iBolt docks for helping out. http://www.ibolt.co/ibmhl-33200 You can request a developer account here: http://www.meetmhl.com/ The final presentation was on Android UI by Paul Turchenko. He broke down views, layouts and showed us how to use some of these tools to help visualize/optimize your Android layouts. 1) Heirarchy Viewer (I’m dying to examine a BT project with this!) http://mobile.tutsplus.com/tutorials/android/android-tools-using-the-hierarchy-viewer/ 2) TraceView http://developer.android.com/tools/debugging/debugging-tracing.html Lots more too, these are just my rough notes for my bolg to do more of my own research. All in all they way they prestented and broke these SDK's down made them much easier to understand instead of just reading how to's and articles. Be on the lookout for Samsung DEV events and Hackathons in your area. They know they need to hold these and reach out to developers like Apple does. They are trying and they do have some cool stuff to show off. This is an event in Spain next month they will be at with some of these exhibitors: http://www.mobileworldcongress.com/ Here's a repository with a sample Multi Window project you might find interesting. https://github.com/samsungchicago/samsungworkshop I did find it funny that the majority of devs there were using Macs to run ADT or Eclipse. Here’s my Airbook launching the AVD 80 stories up while overlooking the city. Not a bad spot to work from! https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/73858894/samsungchicago1.JPG
