I forgot to mention and before anyone asks I found the white envelope icon online but cannot remember where. You can use almost any icon you want or have in your BT_Images directory. Just replace the image name in the code at Step #15 (Part 2)

A quick question, is it easy to add the messages area to the tab bar? If not that's okay just a thought...also does the messages tab replace all of the right navigation bar btns or just the home screen one?

@i4Him I originally wanted to add it to the tab menu but had trouble doing it so I went with the button method. It may be possible but I will have to dig around some more. As far as the right bar button items I only put it on a view where I was not using one via BuzzTouch. It is possible, though, to have multiple right bar buttons programmatically using a spacer between the buttons.

As long as you can put a nav bar in the view it will work. There are some other methods I am looking at to use the notificationd elsewhere in the app. Yes you will have to resubmit to update the source. It should fly through since it is a minor update.

Re member it is still in beta so I am sure there are some bugs. Sometimes I get them other times not.

also can I add a badge to the messages button within the app?

I asked Appoxee support to help me resolve that issue but have not heard from them. It should work on the button internally but isn't for some reason.

I did not try it in just a non tabbed layout but as long as you can insert a nav bar into the view for the button it will work. The other option is just to use a non nav bar button and set it's coordinates in the code to place it on the screen where you want it located but be forewarned that I never could get it to rotate with the view on the iPad. It works fine on the iPhone as a non bar button item independently. If you need help inserting it as a customized non nav bar button let me know.

Also, I am thinking the new iOS 5 Notification Center may make this whole thing easier once I get a look at it this weekend

Hey Guys, Here is an Addendum to the code in Step 15 (Part 2) to use a non navigation bar button with a image background. This is to use only on the iPhone when not rotating the device. The internal badge will show up using this non nav bar button. There are two things here you can change: #1. Where it says CGRectMake you can change the button location on the view. The x,y coordinates are the first two numbers and the last two numbers are the width and height of the button. Remember that the screen views start at 0,0 in the top left of the view. #2. How do I add a border around the button so that it looks for more the refresh btn?

@i4Him...In which scenario? embedded nav bar or non nav bar button?

If you want to use a button that looks like the refresh navigation bar button in the above code the only way I know to do it is either create it yourself or take a screenshot of the navbar button from the simulator and clean it up in a image editor. I did not see a way to create a UIButton in that style from the iOS Dev Library (UIButton & UIBarButton are different classes and do not have access to each other's properties). I probably need to make an official addendum to the changes that can be made in the code...I just realized that you can put the Navigation Bar Button on the left in the original code if you already have a button in your view on the right. All you have to do is change the code for the button to: leftBarButtonItem = Another item of interest, if no one noticed, is the commented out code. Depending on which view you want the navigation bar button in you can uncomment the section of code. It is ordered by index number 0,1,2,3,4. So, if you want the button on the last view uncomment the last section of code and make any modifications you need (left or right button and custom image).

Ian, it certainly sounds strange. The only other thing I can think of without doing a TeamView would be for you to upload the production certificate and see what happens on your device when a message is pushed out. Also, do you mean no badge is showing up even on the main app icon? I expect it would not on the internal nav bar icon but it should on the main one.

Good news Ian! The only way I know to get the badge to work on the internal button is to use a UIButton that is not embedded in the navigation bar. I never could get it to rotate in Landscape mode on the iPad but otherwise it will work.

hi everest, just used your code to get internal button to show badge...working great now...not sure if not being in the navbar will cause future problems since the mailbox.png shows up on all screens , which can be good and bad,..your documents were awesome to get me through this...hope they make it possible in Android soon..thanks again!! ian ps. is it possible to get the UIButton to only show on home screen?

@Ian, What was the problem on apple's side? I'm having the same problem you had, how did you fix it?

@i4Him, the main problem I had was when I was double clicking my downloaded certificates to open up in keychain access they were not going into the right place... I had to open keychain access first then click on login and then drag the development and production push certificated into keychain....from there I was able to export as .p12 files for Appoxee....after that everything seemed to fall into place...still figuring out the best thing to do about badge on mailbox.png inside the app...Appoxee sent me some info I can look at better later...hope this helps

ok so did ad hoc build to share (using testflightapp.com)...wasn't getting push notifications on ad hoc build until i re-downloaded my push production cert. once i uploaded it again to appoxee again all is working in ad hoc.

You are using actual device (iphone) to test for push notif? i read that the simulator will not show push...if you are on device, i had to delete provisioning profiles from phone and reinstall app..then push notes worked...had to do the same on others phones i sent ad hoc to....if that doesn't work i would make sure your provisioning profiles have the users devices linked to them in the IOS Provisioning Portal, download the push certificates again and upload either Developement or Production Push p.12 certificate to appoxee.(use Production push p.12 if doing ad hoc or distibution)..also resinstall your Provisioning Profiles( .mobileprovision) into Xcode(delete same existing ones to start over)...the problem is definitely in the certificate side of things....keep me posted!!

Ian, I did notice Apple made some changes to the portal after you mentioned a lot of your issues were on the certificate end of things. It looks like they made some changes in the last couple of weeks like the need for multiple certs for each unique App ID. A doc update would be in order to keep others from going crazy I am sure! As for the button, not yet. What makes this difficult for me is that there are no nib files to attach a UIButton, etc. in the XCode Interface Builder. I am having to learn how to do a lot programmatically which is taking much longer.

I fixed Appoxee! I was only exporting the private key and not the whole certificate... Causing Problems!

Appoxee, I LOVE YOU! You are making my client so HAPPY! I couldn't get xtify to send out messages quickly... So I continued to try to fix Appoxee, sure enough I fixed it and Appoxee sends out notifications within 20 seconds! MUCH NEEDED for my clients!

Okay now the only thing is when I build for ad-hoc, I don't receive any push notifications

@i4him. Ever get ad hoc push working? I had to re download my push production cert. At this point and upload again to Appoxee.

Ian is right. Go into the shouldAppoxeeRotateToInterfaceOrientation function in your xxxx_appDelegate.m file and make sure within the brackets it says return YES;

I did receive a response from Appoxee - might be because your device hasn't register just yet. I build an ad hoc distribution and loaded on my iPhone and iPad. The app is included in active notifications on both devices, but does not show as subscribed on Appoxee and I don't receive a test message. My list has no registered devices. Any suggestions? Success! An important last step was signing the app with an app specific, not wildcard, provisioning profile that's push enabled. Thanks Everest11 for your excellent instructions.

Thanks @everest11 for your excellent documentation!! I have been away from Buzztouch for a couple of months, but I'm back to the grind working on my v1.5 app. I had previously implemented the php script EasyAPNS, but Appoxee has way more features and capabilities. Love the scheduling capablities too! I was able to get this to work in sandbox mode on my test device. As mentioned earlier, when testing out on a device, you need to wait an hour or so, and your phone will appear in the subscriber list in the Appoxee control panel. Only then can you send a test message. As long as your apns certs are okay etc... I noticed a potential issue when refreshing content though. I disconnected my app from the Buzztouch back-end and I have the app set to auto refresh when new updates are available. Since I have a list of events on my app, being pulled from my online calendar, it needs to be refreshed every few days. When a push notification is sent and the user clicks on the View button, bad things happen if the app is due to be refreshed. Before the user can see the Appoxee push message, the app refreshes and erases the Appoxee message, then renders the Appoxee mail message button useless. It works great though, when a refresh is not in order. This may be an issue with my app since I opted to do auto refreshes, but I am wondering if there is a way to stop the refresh from clearing out all Appoxee messages. I'll try to experiment with this and report back. Thanks again for the details on Appoxee!!!

Hey Birwin, Yep, I did notice the refresh issue and unfortunately it is something that will happen. I would imagine if your content was pretty much static and did not change much you would be ok.

Hey Everest11, Yeah, I am still going to plug this into the next version of my app. It is way more functional than EasyAPNS. To get around the refresh issue for my app I plan to only send push notifications and badges. The real error only comes along when I send a Push/Message combo. I am just learning Objective C but I may try to write an if statement to bypass the refresh if a push/message is sent in. Anyways, your step-by-step documentation is fantastic! What did you name your icon file? Also, make sure that you correctly added the image file to the project. Those are the only issues I can think of that would cause the button image to not show up.

There is no particular place required to place the image. How did you add it to the project? Copy & Paste, Add File, or drag it into the project?

You added the image file to Xcode while the program is running correct? To the list of files on the left once Xcode is running? What was file name extension? .png ? Make sure spelling matches exactly (capital letters?)

My guess is it would be fine....so you are consistently getting push notifications on 1 device? In Appoxee is it showing you 3 devices will receive push notifications? Was the device receiving the push notifications the first one you tested for? Did the other 2 devices get added at a later time?

If all the devices are included in the provisioning profiles and you have the correct .p12 certificate uploaded to Appoxxe all should be good...the other devices are set up to receive push notifications right? In the settings of the device? Also, I think Appoxee is still in testing, my test push messages don't always come thru, and does take awhile for test devicesmto be registered

yes but for exemple now i rebuild my app on my devices (on the second device first )and reupload the .p12 and now only my second device got the push I think when it will be on app store every device will be ok . Hope. Are my thoughts right ?

I think you are right....but Apoxxe is also acting strange so hard to tell....push notifications just arrived about 20 min. After sent...I say go for it

o for the the people who are having problem with push first configure your app id and then download provisioning profiles after you renew (modified something ) or create a new one after you download the prvisioning profile open it with text edit then cmd+f and searc for this '<key>aps-environment</key>' if you have this your ok if you not reconfigure your app id , renew your provisioning profiles and you should be good :))

Hey Ian, I have followed the tutorial step by step but the Push Notifications don't show up on my development app (neither device nor simulator). Also at the Appoxee control panel it shows this.... Total Number of Users: 2 Users with Push Enabled: 0 Isn't the app supposed to ask permission send push notifications? When open my app it doesn't ask me anything. I have successfully 'installed' the Appoxee button/inbox page but the inbox is allways empty. Im not sure what's wrong. I downloaded an updated source code of my project and I'm going trough the tutorial once again. I'll let you know if it works this time. Thanks for looking into this.

!!!It kind of worked!!! =D At least now I got the badge and the inbox working but I didn't get the Push Notification. I think I know what I did wrong the first time, I copied the code from the PDF directly to Xcode and it came with some bad formatting (maybe because of my PDF viewer), this time I copied the code to TextWrangler and 'cleaned' it before adding to Xcode.

Sounds like it is a problem with your apple certificates, are your devices properly set up in the apple provisioning profiles? Make sure to redownload certificates if any changes are made....changing anything in the app Id at apple will usually require you to redownload or create a new certificate...let me know how it's going...cheers!

Nothing, I have gone through the whole certification/signing/etc process, uploaded the p12 file to Appoxee: Type: Sandbox Status: Valid certificate Expiration date: 10/21/2011 9:38:30 PM - (another : 90 days to go) But I still dont get the Push Notification, just the Inbox msg and the badge. Shouldn't the app ask for my permission to receive push notifications? It isnt.

I'm testing on my device. According to Appoxee help guide they say the problem is with my certificate. I'm checking that now. I've lost an entire day on that... This provisioning and certification requirements from Apple should be simpler! =/ I'll let you know when Im done.

I finally got it and you were right, I had two problems... At first the p12 files were not correct and second my provisioning wasn't installed in Xcode in order for me to receive Push Notifications, that's why I received the badge note and the inbox message but not the Push. I think I finally solved it. Just need to wait for about an hour for Appoxee to register my device. Thanks for all your patience and help!!!

Hi there Ian, I'm pretty much back to zero (I dont know why) and my brain is starting to melt!!! Everytime I try to use the Push Profile (as instructed by Appoxee here: http://www.appoxee.com/AppoxeeWebManager/iphoneCode/pushGuide.html) I get an error when debugging on my device. It says 'Error launching remote program: failed to get the task for process 620' Any ideas?! Sorry for all the trouble.

Hi @tonycelestino, No trouble at all...so are you in development or distribution (ad hoc?) mode when debugging on device? Just want to make sure your Provisioning is set up right... Maybe try deleting the app and profiles from device? Hi @tonycelestino, on my mobile most of the day, also on complete vocal rest so cannot talk (sucks!) ... I think the best thing you can do is delete all provisioning profiles and create new from scratch... The Everest11 documentation is what everyone is using...can't think of anything else...it is usually a problem with the certificates and most people need to redo them to get it working...report back after you repeat the certificate process

Its working now! The problem was with the provisioning, certificates and profile, I was using a wildcard Profile, I did a specific profile and it worked fine.

Oh, one more thing... Did you get the internal badge to work? How did you do it?

Where is Generate New under Bundle ID? iOS Provisioning Portal > App IDs > New App IDs > Bundle Seed ID (App ID Prefix) : Where is <Generate New> under Bundle Seed ID? All I get to select is Use Team ID. Is there anything that i'm missing here? I swear that i use to be able to select Generate New. I'm having some problems with setting up push notification on my 2nd App. 1st App is working fine. I'm wondering is the issue related to why i'm getting Use Team ID instead of Generate New. Appoxee is showing me 2 Recipients (0 with Push). Anyone here having the same problem? Any pointers would be much appreciated. Extremely frustrated at the moment.

Thanks to Everest11 and everyone else in this huge thread! I've successfully implemented push on my device! Great instructions! BTW, Appoxee accepts new registrations just fill out the form and they will request more information from you. I currently have apps so i'm not sure if that helped my registration. Took less than 24 hrs. Also be patient when testing. It took a while for the certificates to register on their end.

Hi mysps.. how long did it take for your certificates to register? I have implemented the code and I am getting the badge and the message but not the push notification.

i started yesterday morning and I noticed this morning that it was registered fine. so i'd go to say 24hrs :( i was working on it for 4 hrs and still nothing registered so I let it go until the morning.

i Dont get part 17 on the 2nd page of instructions. Where do we find the @xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx in the code??

Is it possible to just integrate the basic push notification functionality without adding an inbox for the rush messaging? Or would something like Parse be more straight forward to use if you simply want to incorporate basic push notifications? Thanks

I'm going crazy downloaded tons of certificates, .p12, provisioning ecc a lot of stuff after 2 days of just as a badge on icon working push appoxee site now says: Status: Certificate not loaded or incorrect exhausting.

i had the same problem in my opinion just create every certificate from the begining I actualy create a new app and then it work

I got a notification from Appoxee yesterday that contained a letter from Apple saying: We have identified and resolved a recent issue with certificates for iOS and Mac code signing, Apple Push Notifications and Safari Extensions. If you have experienced any problems with a certificate issued over the past 4 days, simply re-generate a new one. Hope that explains, and maybe eases some frustration (cos you know now it's not you!)

What an interesting thread, I too have spent a couple of days trying to get push working. No issues on the mail, but notifications have been a challenge. It did tell me for a few minutes that 1 push was registered, but even though I did nothing, it then said I have 0. The build is fine, 0 errors. The provisioning is adhoc, and I've generated p12's numerous times. I think it might be best to sit tight for a few and watch this topic :) Thanks for the service, and the post up top. Of note: Appoxee's site says to grab the main key, this FAQ says the private one (I tried both, twice :) )

ok i have found a way to do it with out tabbed layout just change rootTabBarController.viewControllers objectAtIndex: 0 with rootNavController.retain retain

Hi All, Great Topic. Thanks Everest to lit the fire... I got appoxee SDK integrated. It was breeze to follow your document and it all worked great.. However i am facing one problem. I am testing this with development certificate not production. Message from the appoxee server do reach my test app. But the problem is i don't get the alert view or the badge. When i open the test app and the appoxee mailbox, then i can hear the push notification sound. THen i close the app, then i can see the badge appear on the app icon. I would have expected the alert, badge to show up right after i send the message from Appoxee server. Any thoughts..?? Please help

Hi, I have a question regarding messages in the inbox. I get push notifications and messages in the inbox. But how do we delete those messages? I don't see any API's provided by appoxee to delete the messages from the app's inbox. Please guide. thanks
