Make the Swtich: Eclipse to Android Studio

############################################## UPDATE: Control Panels for all users are now downloading Android Studio projects and NOT Eclipse projects. I realize this may cause some pain for some but it's time we all move ahead with the now ONLY official Android IDE. WE'LL SURELY FIND SOME COMPILER ERRORS AND BROKEN PLUGINS IN THE COMING DAYS If you run into any download problems or unexpected issues with your Android Studio projects, let me know. This milestone needs passed before I can release several other updates - namely an updated Self Hosted package. --1) Debug, fix, update plugins as needed to work nicely with Android Studio --2) Release the newly updated Self Hosted package (after we're sure this works as expected) --3) Continue on some exciting things I'll be announcing / releasing in Chicago :-) The "download project" screen will begin delivering Android projects suitable for Android Studio instaed of Eclipse. This is a change. Previously, Android projects downloaded from your control panel have been designed to be easily imported into the Eclipse Integrated Development Environment (IDE) which we all know required the installation (and understanding) of the Android SDK and Android Plugin for Eclipse. Android Studio is the official IDE for Android application development (it has been for awhile). We've been holding off on leaving Eclipse behind for sometime now and are moving forward. Many of you may continue to use Eclipse, and there's nothing wrong with that. However, starting in a few days, projects you download from your control panel will be designed to be opened in A-Studio, not Eclipse and using them in Eclipse may require some tinkering. You'll know when your control panel changes when you see an Android Studio graphic on the download screen instead of the little Android man icon. Self-Hosted Users: Users for the self hosted package can also expect an update. There are several fixes, along with this Android Studio change included in the next self hosted release. Expect this a few days after the Buzztouch hosted control panels are updated. Stoked for Chicago!

I find this to be an inevitable step both for Buzztouch and for all of us here. Looking forward to using Android Studio!

I've been using Android studio for the past few projects and generally it's been a better experience (once I imported it according to @GoNorthWest) - so bring it on :)

Using GoNorthWest's videos, I was able to get a working app in Android Studio first time through...much easier (than Eclipse) for a first-time-Android-newbie like me. For those of you with a portfolio of android projects, suspect it will be a but bumpy.

I look forward to the switch with a mixture of anticipation and trepidation. Big question for me is can Eclipse and Android Studio happily co-exist on the same machine - I have seen forums posts suggesting this does not always work. Running both in parallel for a while would be ideal as it means we can ease ourselves into the transition without breaking our existing Eclipse environent. Any experiences or guidance on this?

I'm going to fire up the Android Studio today and play around with it. I'm a Eclipse fan so this is going to be a difficult transition for me! @AlanMac: You can have both on your computer. LA

>can Eclipse and Android Studio happily co-exist on the same machine Yes, in general. What will not work, however, is to try to compile from Eclipse and Studio at the same time, or in quick succession. So, either use one or the other, not both. Eclipse is an old friend (enemy!?) but Studio seems much easier to work with. I am still working with Eclipse all day long, but Studio will be a breeze once I can download projects from the self hosted server.

Eclipse / Studio on the same rig. Yes, this does work. But, like others are mentioning, it's a bit jenky - depending a few things. It's mostly about the location of the Android SDK on your machine. In other words, where is it located. It's a folder, a directory, it has all the "goodies" required to make this work. Previously, with Eclipse, it was necessary to download the Andorid SDK seperatly, along with a plugin for Eclipse that allowed you to make Android projects using the Eclipse IDE. It's helpful to remember that Eclipse is used by lots of non-Android devs and it wasn't / isn't solely used for Android dev. So, that IDE requires a plugin. The plugin in Eclipse was really just some helper tools to make it easy to launch the Android SDK Manager, Device Manager, etc. All of that can be done from the command line but Eclipse made it easier, so to speak, if you had the plugin installed. So, Android SDK, it's on your machine already, before installing Studio. When you install Studio, it's assumed that you did NOT have Eclipse installed and therefore don't already have the Android SDK. When you install Studio, it re-installs the Android SDK (another copy if you already have it somewhere) on your machine. It puts it in: /Users/davidbook/Library/android/sdk Your name will naturally be davidbook (unless you're stalking me). Note: The "Library" folder in your User's home directory is hidden by default. You can't simply browse to it using Finder like in the old days. It's hidden now. Lame lame. But, you can easily unhide it if you want to see what's in it... http://osxdaily.com/2014/12/16/show-user-library-folder-os-x-yosemite/ At this point you have the "old" Android SDK somewhere on your machine. And you have the "new Android SDK" on your machine. You also have Eclipse and Android Studio. It's a matter of understanding WHICH Android SDK folder Eclipse is using and which Android SDK folder Android Studio is using. If you dont' undertand this, you'll pull your hair out. Hope this helps...

Say, I am compiling my first app on Android. The nav bar loaded, but the plugins did not. I thought the problem may be with the Menu with Image, and so I made the Menu Simple the home page. It was great to see that the app recognized the update to the Control Panel and asked to refresh. But the plugins still aren't displayed. I don't see BT_fragment in the logcat. My app has a tab bar. Any ideas on what I am missing? Thanks.

The problem seems to be limited to tab bars. I am still working through that problem. I ran into another situation I thought I should report as well. In the app I am working with, I have a lot of PDFs. In Eclipse, I can use the dash (-) in file names. But in Android Studio, the app will not build with a dash in the file name of a PDF. However, you can use spaces, capital letters, and underscores (_) in your file names. This isn't a Buzztouch issue, but seems to be a limitation we have in Android Studio that we don't have in Eclipse. Actually, I really like the messages I am getting in Android Studio, and overall I think it will be a great change for all of us.

"A small step for Buzztouch, a giant leap for me"... er... or perhaps the opposite? Ladies and Gentlemen, Android for Dummies Like Me is now available! Never been able even to just import a package in Eclipse, and now I'm playing with Android Studio! Wow! Incredible! Bravo and thank you to David & the Gang!!! And thanks to some of you who already gave me tips and tricks... @Susan: you're right, in res -> drawable, dash is forbidden. But not in assets -> BT_Docs. Didn't try with PDFs, but HTML, PNG, and JPG files are ok with dash. OK, now, some bad news... Yes, there's a problem with tabs Header image ratio is not preserved in Menu Image Advanced Single Location Default Zoom doesn't work in Location Map (and funny typo in CP at Show Share Screenshot) And I'm afraid I'll stumble upon more issues... Just starting... Cheers Jack

Another thing I haven't figured out yet is how to use the extra layout and drawable folders. In Eclipse, for the Menu with Image, there is an extra folder so that the header image will format correctly on tablets. Go to the plugin folder, find the extra file, and include it in the project. The only thing is that I am not sure where it goes in Android Studio. If you don't use the extra layout folder and xml file, then the header image will be too small on tablets. The folder name is layout-sw600dp.

I started a new issue here: https://www.buzztouch.com/forum/thread.php?fid=3A4972600F4D11A64B33C93&tid=3A4972600F4D11A64B33C93 Dealing with Google Maps and the AndroidStudio package from BT.com. I had them working with the Eclipse package from a week or so ago, using Marks' instructions...now nothing but a big fat JAVA error.

BTW, the issue above (Google Maps on the new AndroidStudio package is SOLVED In Android Studio, File, Project Structure, Under properties, set my Compile SDK to API 14 (was set to 21). Then under Flavors, set Target SDK to API 14 as well. Clean, Build and Run - Google maps works fine! What a great way to head to BuzzCon! happy to have that off my back

Hi Everyone! Just wanted to see if anyone knows when the next self hosted release is coming with Android Studio? I'd like to update an app I have to AS, but wondering whether or not to wait for the next Self-Hosted release.
