installing your apps over wifi

So tonight I found myself in a small pickle. I was trying to test out a plugin I was working on that needs an actual device (rather than simulator), but I didn't have my cord handy. Not wanting to go through the hassle of testflight, I decided to find another way of getting my app to my phone using just my wifi connection. Turns out, it can be done - and relatively easy - if you have a jailbroken phone. Here's how: 1) Install AppCake: http://iphonecake.com/i/ --Note: AppCake is used primarily for stealing apps. I do not condone or support it's use for that - we're all trying our best to make a little money for our efforts. But, it is great for doing test work for your apps in development! 2) Install OpenSSH from Cydia 3) Go to Settings->Wifi->(your network) and take note of your ip address. Mine was 10.0.0.6. 4) Open your favorite FTP program on your computer and use SFTP to log into your device. Use the ip address from #3, and use the following username/password: username: root password: alpine 5) Navigate to /private/var/mobile/Documents/Downloads 6) Copy your .ipa file (after compiling using ad-hoc in Xcode) into the Downloads folder on your iPhone. 7) Open AppCake app on your iPhone and go to Downloads. Click on "install" ------- Next time you want to install an app, simply follow steps 5, 6 & 7. - will take about 5 seconds to install your app over wifi.

Jailbreak is a simple (almost) one step process these days. Not like earlier when you needed three hands just to get to DFU mode!

Since Rawls pointed out the corrections needed for self hosting OTA, I just use the BT Over the Air functionality… It's fairly simple. https://www.buzztouch.com/files/howtos/BTOTA.pdf Cheers! -- Smug

No need for a jailbreak as this can be done easily if you distribute the package as ad-hoc enterprise edition. Will post a tutorial if interested.

Over the air distribution is great and if you have an enterprise account then you do not have to register devices!

I have strong opinions about Jailbreaking. I will not do it! That's one plain rule I am making. I do understand the benefits of Jailbreaking, but if you ask me, it's just unethical to hack someone's code and change it for a few nice extras. I think the thing I hate most about Jailbreaking is pirating apps. I just hate this. However, the link AussieRyan gave above is very good. I look forward to using it! Thanks for the share.

I definitely don't condone pirating either. But making my phone do what I want is something I value. There's not much I use it for - the main reason (other than this new trick which will make my testing soo much faster), i use it to improve the reliability of my pebble watch.

I had a jailbroken 3GS. I not want to start a debate on the ethics front, suffice to say it is legal. At the time I did it because my phone was locked to an operator that I was not a customer of, then I found some cool utilities that Apple would not allow onto the app store. I'm not 100% OK with some of the restraints that are imposed, but I have had no reason to jailbreak my iPhone 5 as I since found those utilities (or their equivalents) on Android in Google Play!

btw, back to the thread, I often install my android dev apps from dropbox - does that not work for apple? (I haven't tried).

Nope - Apple makes it a lot harder to get your app on your phone than does Android. Although FTP is pretty darn quick.

Ah, jailbreaking conversations popping up. So my ten cents on this topic is as follows. ......... Make sense? I hope so. Didn't want to go into too much depth. Some people use their DVD RW to burn pirated movies, should we stop making DVD writers? Some people use their super fast interweb hookup for downloading things that shouldn't be downloaded, should be criminalize bandwidth? Probably not. Some people use jailbreaking for bad fings and some folks use it for, well, eh, good fings. The jailbreaking marketplace and community has changed, many of the pretty iOS features we now have appeared on there first. Plusses and minuses. Horses for courses, swings and roundabouts. License plates and chocolate candy. I used to do it for myself and friends but I don't anymore. There are 10 types of people, those that understand binary and those that don't. Ps Good work Chris1

Actually, I did a big presentation at BuzzDay for Jailbreaking Benefits: https://buzztouchmods.com/Jailbreaking.pdf I talked about those points in the PDF, that's why information is missing, it was so I could talk about it, not have it word for word on the PDF, still, some useful information there. I'm a huge advocate for jailbreaking and have done it since it first started - and is the second community I am most active in, next to buzztouch. I highly recommend anyone interested in looking into it to check it out, @Thomas, and some others, get rid of those misconceptions that jailbreaking is only for pirates, it's so much more :-) @MacApple knows.. if you want to see the future (iOS8), jailbreak. ;-) Cheers! David EDIT: Chris, sorry forgot to mention, great share - thank you!

Probably an obvious fact, but in case anyone doesn't know. You should change the password from alpine to something else ASAP. I jail broke once and about a week later I got hacked. I would love to know how they did it, but yeah. Just change your password. Jeremy

Yep - if you're on public wifi it would be really easy to FTP in. Now, what you do from there I don't know. And if I did, I wouldn't want to broadcast it. Hope your hack wasn't too bad?

They can get in with cellular ip which is what I think happened. Yeah the hack wasn't bad. Enjoyable. My phone got turned into a big collection of Rick Astley. Background, contact images, ringtone, message tone, wasn't a malicious hack. But it did teach me how to do that to a phone if I had access to it. Jeremy
