Learning the BT way

Hi kids, So one of the things I'm learning about BT from the webinar videos is that when I want to use a graphic image, I have to move the image file to the downloaded project folder and into the images folder. what I'm confused about is why is there a Files/Media link in the applications control panel area. What's that about? Scott

That is where you can upload to your server or BT server

upload what? Graphics, movies and audio media? ok. So then it would appear that I can use that area to link to my app so that the app doesnt have to have those potentially heavy files in them. They can just be downloaded/streamed from the server. How do I tell my app to link to the media on the server and how can I embed that media as well?

Check out this tutorial I did some time about about the BT File Manager. Should clear things up! https://www.buzztouch.com/forum/thread.php?tid=C377832598456EE4FBDA8F6 Mark

Yep! The File Manager was envisioned, I believe, as a place to collect, organize and manage the media that you intend to use in your app. You've discovered you can link to any media item via URL. Most people, however, don't realize that the items you upload there don't get included with your project download...though you can get a zip file of the, and add them to your project manually. I typically don't use the File Manager, but I think others use it pretty heavily. If nothing else, it's a good backup location for your apps media! Mark

Ok. Clarification..... So,since there is a url attached to each media item in the File manager, then theoretically I dont have to actually hard code an image file into my app when compiling..... I could link to it IN the file manager, no?

That is correct. For any screen where you can specify the media via URL or local (in app) file name, you can use a URL from the BT File Manager. But...be considerate, and don't link to something that's gonna be so popular it blows their servers away! I don't think it was "intended" for that use, but it does work. DropBox, HostGator, etc, are all other options for linking via URL. Mark

Actually, I would use that sparingly. I'm using an app service that uses that method and it's killing me in terms of download times. My apps are ssssllllooooooowwwww because of it. My interest is merely clarification at this time. But I can see using that for some items now and again.

There's one other advantage to the file manager - sharing your account in a team setting. There's been instances when I've helped others on their app by logging into their control panel (with their permission of course) and downloading their source code to work on the app. I was able to download all the images in a zip file from their file manager, which meant I was seeing the same thing in the app that they were.

I have nothing to say here. I just hit refresh on this page and it put in my former comment. I can't delete, but I can edit..... so I'll just say, "Go Giants!"
