Experience with Appirater

Hey everyone! As is the case for a lot of apps out there, it can be difficult to get your users to rate & review your iOS application. I'm just curious to hear about the experience of BT users who have used Appirater within their iOS app. http://arashpayan.com/blog/2009/09/07/presenting-appirater/ Has it helped? What are your ideal settings? I've been contemplating implementing the code within my apps, but I've also been tentative because I don't want to provide a poor user experience or receive negative reviews because of users being "annoyed" of the pop-up. Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't plan on making it pop-up at every use! I was thinking of making it pop-up for the first time after the user has accessed the app for their 3rd time. Then maybe a reminder every 2nd launch? Any thoughts on the matter? Thanks in advance for the feedback! :)

I've been planning on putting it in my next update. I have it in, but haven't released the update yet. So far seems to be really good. I'm very bad with code and I was able to implement it really quickly. It also allows you to adjust how many days it is before a user gets that pop up. For example, you can make it so that it doesn't pop up until 5 days after the first time the app is opened. Hope this helps, sorry I can't say if has truly been successful since I haven't finished the update yet, but at least it's easy to implement. David

Hey David! Thanks for the response, I appreciate your feedback. Out of curiosity, are you working with a BT 3.0 app? Did you follow a certain guide to implement it within your app? I think I will also take the leap of faith and try it out within my apps! Thanks again. Nicholas :)

Hi Nicholas, I implemented it into a BT 2.0 app, and then ditched it to start working on 3.0, so I haven't put it in a 3.0 version. I could always be wrong, but it seems like it wouldn't make a difference in compatibility. In terms of instructions, I downloaded it from here: https://www.cocoacontrols.com/controls/appirater. When you download it, there's a "Read Me" document that helps you put it your app. David

Hey David, Thank you again for your bits of wisdom, I really appreciate it. Nothing else to left to do but get started on implementing it! Thanks again! Nicholas

You see it all the time in apps throughout the app store. But don't you often find them annoying an want to just use the app? It's only my opinion, but having a menu item with SanDeep's plugin (see link below), is a lot less intrusive and only people who want to write reviews will. Otherwise, you are provoking them to write a review, meaning more chance of writing a bad review. Most of the time, I never write reviews for apps. It seems harsh, however I only review apps I want to. As an app developer, I know how painful a bad review can be, so if there's a problem, I'll contact the developer and not write a bad review. If there's a must get app then, yes, I will write a review. My philosophy is "If it's not positive, don't say it"

Hey Thomas! You bring up a good point and I've been debating it for the longest time. A good portion of my iOS apps have now been out there for roughly a year and trying to bring in ratings/reviews can be difficult. After thinking it through, I thought it would be a good idea to at least test it out and see how it fairs, for now. I have the app set up so that users will only be prompted to rate/review it after their 3rd use of the app. My apps tend to be very information-heavy, so the thought process behind my choice is that if users don't like the app, they will likely be deleting it or not accessing it again within the 1st or 2nd use, at the most (more likely to be done by the 1st use). Also, by the 3rd time the user uses the app, if he/she simply does not want to rate it, a simple "No, thanks" will never ask them again. And since many can still not be bothered to leave a rating/review, it's difficult to imagine a displeased user taking the ever step or two to leave a negative rating, although that could definitely happen and is a risk to consider. That being said, the hopes are that by the 3rd use, only the users that have stuck with the app would be receiving the message. Oh, and I've also had Sandeep's plugin in my apps and it's worked really well, but only in terms of intercepting negative feedback. Additionally, most of the negative feedback has been from users who first download and use the app and for whatever reason, expect it to be different than what they paid for. Worth trying it out - risk vs reward, haha! I've heard success stories with it implemented and I've also heard of not-so good stories. We'll see which one this ends up being! Thanks for sharing your POV! Nicholas
