Building apps with xcode

I am in the process of working through Buzztouch U and ran across this question: Can you create iOS apps on a Windows based PC? I know from watching the accompanying video that the correct answer is "no" but that brought up a question for me. A month or so ago I was looking into what is required to build ios apps on a windows based pc, and I downloaded xcode and some simulator software. I was under the impression that you COULD build an ios app on a windows pc, based upon what I had read. Was I badly mistaken?

I would suggest you were not 'badly' mistaken. You need a working mac osx environment and you need xcode. If you can get the environment working on something other than a mac, then you might be in business, but it is not the recommended approach.

I was under the impression that the software I downloaded created a simulated osx environment on the windows pc. Believe me when I say, I have a LOT to learn! Some of the info in the Buzztouch U videos pushes the envelope of my knowledge. I'm not totally confused yet, but have gotten close a few times ;-) @AlanMac: Thanks for the prompt reply

What was the simulator software you downloaded? Does it simulate OSX? If so, you *might* be able to download XCode into the simulated environment and be in luck.

The basic idea is that Mac OS X is required for Xcode to run. I've not heard of any valid workarounds for that. Since Xcode comes as a dmg file, that only runs on Mac OS X. You "could" create a Hackintosh on PC hardware, and I've heard that works, but it does raise some ethical issues. Mark

I hope you all can excuse my ignorance (for a while at least). The software I downloaded was found in a Google search in my effort to learn how to code apps. I didn't keep it because I was totally overwhelmed by it all at the time. Unfortunately I don't recall the name of it, but I do remember also downloading Xcode. What I did at the time is quite vague to me now. When I stumbled across buzztouch, I felt I had finally found the best place to start!

I am running an old pc with windows xp. Again, I can't recall exactly how or where I got the data, but I did have Xcode up and running on this machine. It was at that point that I became overwhelmed with the process. I am upgrading to another windows based pc in January, and I will explore all options at that time. If I am understanding correctly, if I can get Xcode operating I will be able to compile the code for apps.
