How do I remove Google Maps from my app?

I am trying to submit one of my Buzztouch server apps for BlackBerry AppWorld but when I use my apk it says that it is not compatible because of com.google.android.maps. How do I remove Google Maps?

I'm a bit confused here. Buzztouch only provides source for iOS and Android apps. It doesn't yet support Blackberry. Could that be the problem? Mark

Yes, but RIM provides tools to convert Android apps to Playbook apps. Read more here: https://bdsc.webapps.blackberry.com/android/tool/ I guess I should have explained better. I have already tried Commenting out Google Maps from Android.Manifest. Any other suggestions?

Unfortunately, I don't have any other suggestions. I poked around the code a bit, but can't find anything else to remove, aside from some Google Maps API key references in strings.xml. Hopefully somebody else has the answer! Mark

It looks like I'm not the only one trying to get a free Playbook tablet by converting his Android app to Blackberry. ;) Here's what validated my app: 1) Delete BT_screen_map.java from the src folder. 2) Remove the two lines of Google Maps code at the end of AndroidManifest.xml. 3) You may also need to edit out the Google Maps related functions from BT_item.java.

Fuddes - how long do RIM take to accept the app? Any idea?

I'm not sure, I haven't submitted mine yet. I'm pretty sure you only have to submit it by a certain date. I don't think it actually needs to be approved before that date, but it's hard to say since they don't really have any official rules to the offer posted anywhere. If you're interested, I'd recommend getting started right away. You have to have a form signed by a notary to get your developer account approved, and I'm not sure how long it takes to get approval from them. I'm sending mine in today.

But it's hard to tell since they don't seem to have any rules posted about the offer. If you're interested, I'd recommend signing up for a developer account right away. Luckily I'm a registered Sole Trader here in Oz, so all I had to do was send in a print-out of my registration details. Hope that approve it soon :D

One quick question- after you've converted the app to BB, does the app use the small devices or the large device image from BT? I would assume large, but just checking considering it converts the code.

Thanks fuddes! @javoooo I don't know how long it takes for an app to get approved but it took 3 days for my vendor account to get approved and I have now submitted 2 apps. Hopefully they will get approved soon and I will get my free playbook

It took them 3 days to approve my vendor account. Just in case anyone was wondering. Thanks fuddes for telling me what to remove! Hopefully both of my apps get approved!

From what their representative says, it could be a long time before we hear about approvals. They've apparently been bombarded with app submissions, and they're being picky about who they give tablets to (submissions have to be deemed useful to the end user, which is at their discretion. So no hello world or fart apps. :P

Damn, I don't think mine are useful as such. One is a mobile control panel for a game server (includes other functions like news, tips and a quiz) , and another is an interactive game guide. I'll call them and see what they think.

Hopefully at least one of mine gets approved for a tablet. Maybe I'll submit one more just to be safe.

koopakid08, did you ever get this figured out? I'm having the same issue. I have commented out anything the referencing Google Maps and don't have the BT java files. I'm at a loss. Any help would be very welcome.

Hi @fuddes, I got approved within 48 hours I think. It was pretty quick either way. @zohner - I removed any statement that had to do with Google maps (from AndroidManifest.xml and srings.xml), and also deleted two Java files that had the term location in them. There was also one other XML file that had the term location in it...got rid of that. This was for a v1.4 app. After that, everything validated just fine at BlackBerry. I used the online validator and packager. Mark

Thanks for the tips. I was able to change the XML files and changed a bunch of other files that had location but it still won't play nicely with BlackBerry. I'm thinking that this development hell that RIP, errrr.... RIM, puts people through may have something to do with their hemorrhaging of money and eventual demise.
