Even though I lived in the northeastern USA, when I started paying attention to the NFL in 1976, I adopted as my favorite team a new team, one from all the way across the continent. If you told the 1976 ResearchDepartment (or even the 1983 ResearchDepartment) that it would take until 2014 for the 'Hawks to win a Super Bowl, he would be extremely unhappy with you. When I couldn't follow the NFL as easily, like in my first two years of college, my dad would follow the Seahawks and report to me on what they were doing (I recall that one really important piece of news each week was that Steve Largent "got his catch" to continue his record-setting streak of consecutive games with a catch). My dad would refer to the Seahawks as "your team" or even "your former team," because I wasn't following them the same way I had in 1976-1987. This year, I started following the NFL as a way of staying closer to my mom, who lives very far from me and follows the NFL religiously. The Super Bowl was a lot more fun for me this year than in recent years, for three reasons. First, I had been paying attention to the NFL all season, so I knew about the trends, the players who had big seasons, the players who had disappointed, the styles of the different teams. I saw quite a bit of Denver and Seattle in the 2013 season, plus their playoff games, so I knew the teams really well coming in to the playoffs. Reading all the Super Bowl previews after skipping the season just doesn't give one the same preparation for the Super Bowl as following the league all season does. The second reason this Super Bowl was more fun for me than other recent SBs is because I spent the whole game chatting with my mom about the game. And the third reason I enjoyed this Super Bowl so much, of course, is that in my first season back as an NFL fan since about 1994 or 1995, I got to see my childhood team have a great season and FINALLY win the Super Bowl. A blowout isn't necessarily a boring game when it's your team that's administering the smackdown. I enjoyed this game to the very end, and then even watched the post-game stuff, then watched the "'Bout That Action, Boss" video a coupla more times, plus another viewing of the "Seahawks Savant" video, before going to bed. And I'm three hours ahead of EST, so it was LATE here. Totally worth it.
