Dreamhost

Hello, I am having trouble getting the self hosted BT over to dreamhost. I was hoping someone might be able to lend a nice teaching hand

I'm not a dreamhost client, but I run my own Self Hosted... Are you having issues on install? It's similar to some of the more common PHP/MySQL Packages like Joomla or Wordpress... What challenges you? Cheers! -- Smug

Well, in a general sense, Dreamhost (or any hosting company) should provide you with credentials to use FTP to upload/download files from your 'space'. If so, what you'll want to do is find a good 'spot' for your BT Server. I run several websites off of one host, so what I do is have subdirectories for each domain. If you plan on running more than one domain (either now, or in the future) you may want to do something similar. So, Unzip the self hosted package on your local machine, and use FTP to place those files in your desired location on your server. Then, using a web browser, enter the path to the BT_root/installation/ directory. (like, www.myhost.com/BT/install/) and fill in the config details on the web page. Then you'll need to edit your www.myhost.com/BT/config.php file (usually by FTP, or an FTP enabled file editor, such as 'TextWrangler' or 'Notepad++') and fill in the info not given during the install script. It sounds a little more complicated than it is, and I know that after you've done it once, it'll seem like old news. Just getting over that first hurdle is the key. Let us know how it goes! Cheers! -- Smug

Yeah for some reason dreamhost isn't letting me get it figured out. I have the bt/install located but nothing shows up after that.

You have it uploaded to the web server? And when you use a web browser (safari, firefox) to view the location, what do you see? Have you ever installed a web based package before (joomla, wordpress, etc) it is very similar. Does dream host have a support team to assist? Cheers! -- Smug

Their support team hasn't gotten back to me. I will have to check when I put it in a web browser and get back to you... I'm sure I have done something wrong this is all new to me just trying to have some fun ad learn a new thing!!

Well, once you've uploaded the files via FTP, 'most' of the configuration is done via web browser. If you haven't gotten to that part yet, you'll need to see how that turns out first. Check out the BTU videos, or the Videos of GoNorthWest (youtube.com/gonorthwest) and he shows you from start to finish. Cheers! -- Smug

I uploaded it by FTP, and when I go type into a web browser, I get the error message 404 URL not found?

Well, that means the page isn't found. Either the URL is incorrect by virtue of mis-typing, or you uploaded it to one place, and your URL is another place. If it is in a subdirectory, remember to add that to the URL (if applicable). Meaning, if my domain 'root' is www.mydomain.com and my BT install is in a subdirectory called 'BT', then my URL should be 'www.mydomain.com/BT' Cheers! -- Smug

Smug thanks.. noticed that the bt was not a subdirectory, but a whole different directory itself. I will have to go back and start from the beginning and hopefully not screw it this time. I think i'll wait to hear back from the support team first to see if they have dealt with the bt control panel or not

They probably haven't. But that shouldn't be an issue. If you let them know it's similar to other PHP/MySQL arrangements, they should be able to assist you. but let us know if you have questions; all of us have done this the first time at least once. :) Cheers! -- Smug

Well I tried asking over there, but the support team doesn't handle things like this so lets see if somehow I can get this bad boy rolling on my own!! And I think I am now on the right path Smug.. So I open up and run filezilla putting in my hostname (registered web domain) my username password and port 21. My next step should be to download and unzip the bt-server file and drag those into a new subdirectory that I created(www.mydomain.com/BT-server) is that correct? should be something like 500+ files?

It really depends on your preferences... Either way would work ok. It's how you want the files organized. Cheers! -- Smug
