Android v3 Maps Are NOT Supported in Emulator

Let me start by saying this is an Android issue, not a Buzztouch one. Buzztouch recently released the Android v3 code update, which includes support for the new Google Maps API for Android v2. That code works perfectly, provided that you run it on an actual device. I've worked with a number of people trying to get maps working on their emulator, and then finally threw together a test project myself, but to no avail. Did some research...talked with David Book...and ultimately concluded it's not supported. Here's a stackoverflow article that talks about it: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/17204578/google-maps-android-api-v2-not-show-maps-on-emulator The closest I got to getting this to work ended up in the OpenGL error reference above. I could see the map controls, but no tiles. All other versions of the emulator I tried failed. So, until this gets worked out at some point, or in case somebody here at Buzztouch has figured out the magic formula, don't bother to try maps on the Android Emulator. Either trust that it actually works (provided you've configured it correctly), or test it on an actual device (which you should be doing anyway). Eventually Google will get it worked out, but it doesn't seem like a high priority. Mark

I'm still doing some testing on various emulator types, but no success so far. I'm so looking forward to a post from somebody saying, "Hey, I've got it working!" Mark

That's pretty cool! I can't wait 'till I have some time to work on offline maps. I have great app ideas that would use that feature. Mark

Hopefully I'll have documented it by then. Also, Android uses the 'Mobile Atlas Creator' to create your map tiles, which makes it soooooo easy. If you've read my iOS instructions, there is a million little steps you have to do in Perl, and using the command line, which is fine, but using MOBAC (Mobile Atlas Creator) it's one stop shopping for everything. Eliminates almost all of the other tutorials, except the actual iOS part. Hopefully I can find a format that will allow us to use the same SQLite DB for both projects. The downside is you 'have' to have your Map SQLite database on the SD Card; I can't seem to get it to work 'within' the app itself. It has to be an external file. I'm sure that's just a limitation of my ability. Cheers! -- Smug
