Tip: Don't discontinue your older versions of apps

Hi guys, I just thought I'd let you know on some important information. With the latest iOS 7 release, Apple secretly published a new feature that applies to all iOS versions. The feature is that even if the current version of the app is not compatible, you can now download previous versions of that app. For example, a few years ago, the Facebook app worked for iPhone 3G users. But now, because it has a minimum of iOS 5, you cannot download the latest version. This new feature lets you download the last update of the app that was compatible with your iOS version. I took out my buried iPod touch from years ago and tested this feature out. That iPod has been in my desk draw for about two years being unused, so I'm glad I got it out for the one-off. But I took this screenshot to tell you what I'm talking about: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/35528309/App/0%2C1462%2Csz%3D1%26i%3D334840%2C00.jpg What this means is that you can't start discontinuing your previous versions of the app. Last year, I made a v1.5 app and submitted it to Apple. About 6 months ago, I rebuilt it on v2.0. But I cannot delete the v1.5 app from my control panel, because that would be discontinuing the previous version. Do you see what I mean? So I just thought I'd tell you this little tip. It's a good feature for the users of iOS devices, but it'll be a little annoying for us as developers.

That's pretty cool! One downside I can see, though, is that if the app has content which is updated often, you now have multiple versions of the app to update! But, other than that, it seems like a good deal. What I'm really looking forward to is automatic updates of installed apps. No longer will I have to worry whether my users are applying iTunes updates or not! Mark

Thanks for the tip! I wonder if you can submit an update with an older version to fix bugs... That would be awful if people were downloading a buggy version!

Yep - same issue for Android developers. Aim in the butt to maintain 2 versions of same app - especially when you're making changed at the code level.

From what I've heard you can discontinue in the 'rights and pricing'. One problem may remain if you don't have older devices to test the discontinued apps and you didn't save old versions in xcode.
