Ihave experimented with trying my own icons and I found it very hit and miss. I had some luck if I made them as png, around 30 pixels square and have a transparent background. Them buttons can be a range of colors, text can be under, inside, maybe over. Colors are great, alignment is tough, really depends on the screen size. You have only the margin to adjust to center them. Would be nice if there were a centering feature for the buttons.
