Creating first buzz touch app on a windows vista operating system and got this error message: [2011-05-20 19:48:24 - com.android.ide.eclipse.adt.internal.project.AndroidManifestHelper] Unable to read C:Program FilesAndroidandroid-sdkAndroidManife

I was trying to create my first buzztouch app on my windows vista laptop os and received this error message: [2011-05-20 19:48:24 - com.android.ide.eclipse.adt.internal.project.AndroidManifestHelper] Unable to read C:\Program Files\Android\android-sdk\AndroidManifest.xml: java.io.FileNotFoundException: C:\Program Files\Android\android-sdk\AndroidManifest.xml (The system cannot find the file specified) [2011-05-20 19:48:24 - com.android.ide.eclipse.adt.internal.project.AndroidManifestHelper] Unable to read C:\Program Files\Android\android-sdk\AndroidManifest.xml: java.io.FileNotFoundException: C:\Program Files\Android\android-sdk\AndroidManifest.xml (The system cannot find the file specified) I cannot find the file(s) that they say they cannot read. Did I download something wrong or did not install a package from Android sdk? I would love some help with this as I am excited about creating new apps.

Android setup is super tough on some machines. Watch the Android / Eclipse videos in your conrol panel if you didn't yet. If you have, and still struggle, do a google search for 'installing the android sdk on windows' You'll get it ;-)

I have found there is a particular process to follow when installing on Windows (I have have installed on Windows XP, Vista and 7 with no problems now) 1. Install the JDK (Java Development Kit) from here: http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/index.html 2. Download the Android SDK AND the installer exe file here: http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html 3. Unpack the SDK zip file then run the installer.exe file, while Android SDK installing you will probably get a message saying something like 'Jave Development Environment not found' just select the 'back' button then click next again and should be OK to continue installation (don't know why it doesnt detect the JDK first time, has happened on every install I've done) 4. Answer 'Yes' when Android SDK install finishing to start the AVD manager (think thats what its called) then select all packages to install (these are basically all the different profiles for the Android operating system eg Google various profiles, Android various profiles, Samsung, LG etc) 5 Download and unzip the 'Eclipse' program from here http://www.eclipse.org/downloads/ 6. Don't need to install Eclipse, it runs already from within the unzipped folder when you select the Eclipse application (blue ball icon) 7. For digital signing for distribution you will also need the the Sourcforge Keytool here http://keytool.sourceforge.net/ easily installed from within Eclipse by following the sourceforge installing instructions which is selected on the left sidebar ( I always follow the first option to install from within Eclipse rather than download anything) Oh yeah, and have fun! :-)

Is it better to have android with the self installer or as a zipped package, or does it make no difference at all?

You download both of those files, the zip file is the Android SDK & the .exe is an additional installer file for beginners

Once you have installed JDK, Android SDK, Eclipse and Keytool, open Eclipse and select Help > Android SDK and AVD Manager, once open select 'Installed Packages' to view what you already have or 'Available Packages' to view the rest still available, from there you can elect 'all' or search through for the Google API Level 4 (I just select all android & third party & then download/install them - selecting all takes a while to download and install)

I followed these superb instructions, and yet Eclipse does not give me a File > New > Android Project option as it states in my downloaded README.txt. Can anyone help?

Hi in Gates...if you don't see an option to create a new Android project in the File menu then you dont' have the Android SDK installed. I realize you may understand this but it really is that simple. No Android SDK + Eclipse = no New Android project menu option.
