rejected by Apple because it's a book

okay well the problem is it is a book. it's a reference guide for Boy Scout leaders. now I know it's a viable app because I've had nearly 5000 downloads of it on Google play. so guys Shirley some of you have had Apple rejected for reasons such is this... what do I need to do to make apple "like" it? is there an easy way to put some sort of search bar on it that would bring up various sections based on a keyword? should I add some sort of quizzes so that leaders can " train themselves"? whatever feedback you can give would be greatly appreciated, particularly since I'm out 99 dollars a year versus 25 dollars a lifetime with droid... seems they are let the market decide what's high quality and what's not, but then I guess it just wouldn't be Apple would it. cheers al

can we see some screen shots of the app so we can better understand your app's design?

Hey ASusoeff, When I first submitted my app "TGfU Games for Elementary PE" (http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/tgfu-games-for-elementary-pe/id549014086?ls=1&mt=8), I got the very same rejection. By the next submission, this rejection issue was gone and I received issue 10.6 for the next 5 submissions (until the 6th submission when it was approved on October 1st of this year). What I did is twofold: 1) Add plenty of native iOS functionality. Printing for my 200 PDF files, Twitter, Videos, Notepads, etc. Basically, I added what I could in terms of function without cluttering my app and keeping it's primary intended use, but it seems like Apple is often more focused on iOS functionality versus content, per se. 2) I replied to the Resolution Center stating that this was not a book and was designed as a reference application, and by definition, a reference application is one in which there is a "collection" of things, whether it be documents, files, pictures, etc. This should help in future submissions. Nicholas

so, if i change all the "pages" (screens) from html5 to pdf and add a "print this" button on each page you think that might do the trick?

It's up to you, really. I chose to go the PDF route. I already got rejected even with the Print function available. You will simply need to add more "features" to your app, in my opinion. Experiment with the different plugins available on Buzztouch and take a look at the plugin market, you might find something you could use!

if it really is a book, why not create it in iBooks Author?

In my view, the main difference between an ebook and an app is that the app stores some data on the device. For instance, keep statistics on how many times did you read one chapter of the book, shuffle the order in which the music plays, search with some kind of statistics, availability of comments to some kind of user community and so on. If the user can customize it for his device and there are some data that are local to the device, then it really is an app, a user programmable app. Having said that, I do have six non-programmable apps in the Google Play store and I do not have any in the Apple store. The main reason I came to BuzzTouch is the possibility of adding local app functionality through custom programming. (I do not have anything on the Apple side because I do not have Apple hardware, hopefully that will change in the future.) If there are similar apps already in the App Store, try to see what do they have and you have not, then add those features to your app. My two cents, of course.

add a quiz to the app and other plugins that allow a user to interact with the app. Click the opt in your apple control panel to hold for dev release. This way you can build the app to pass apple's review process. Then once approved jump in there make your changes and release that baby! The first time the app loads anyway it will ask users for a refresh and bam you are up and running. Just my thoughts. Tony

It seems that having Apple approve your app is something of a hit and miss affair. What I want in my app should be WHAT I WANT, not what they think. I have a healthy relationship with the Apple ecosystem, but this is making me think again... unless these are isolated incidents...

Hi ASusoeff, My app was rejected in December 2012 as iTunes says it's a book. My listing was under LIFESTYLES and they suggested to list under iBooks. I've not done so just yet as there are many such APPS in their store. After reading your answers above I am confident to implement as it makes sense to interface interactivity. But not being a designer myself can you please advise me meaning of couple of technical pharses: 1) DEV & 2) iOS functionality? (My APP has been created by 3rd party developer) Chris
