After the upgrade to Mavericks, or Yosemite, or whatever darn version is out this week, when click on the 'fullscreen' button on a window, it now takes over the screen, rendering my second monitor useless. How droll. Then I found this free utility: http://www.boastr.net And now I've reset the button to behave the way it did before 'the improvements'. It might work for you as well. Mac only.
