php magic_quotes_gpc=on problem with ckeditor

Hi, In addition to my previous post (http://www.buzztouch.com/forum/thread.php?tid=C8EF7A40C6EF2FF117394DA&status=&searchInput=search...&sortColumn=FT.dateStampUTC&sortUpDown=DESC¤tPage=1&doViews=1) I found out that the problems are caused by the php server setting magic_quotes_gpc=on Is it safe to turn it off (or will my other software on the server, joomla websites, have security-issues) If it is not safe: Does anyone know how to change the code to work as it should be??? Thanks in advance and Best Regards, Danny

Ok I found out that a .htaccess file in the root of the domain (public_html) with the following line in it:php_flag magic_quotes_gpc Off , solves it (for the moment). I don't know if there is a potential security-risk and hope someone can confirm that what I did was the right thing (though I think that the code should be optimized for both situations magic_quotes On or Off) Best Regards, Danny

Hi Danny, away for a few days so just getting to the other message too. As far as that message goes, it sounds like you have it figured out. Yes, the forum strips the quotes when you cut / paste. So can't wait to get this forum updated! magic_quotes: I'm not totally sure how that HTML editor works. It's a bit cryptic. I'm not big fan of online editors anyway but it's nice to have I guess? I can say this about magic-quotes, it's been a very very long time since I've done any development work with them 'on' so I'm confident that turning them off will be fine. A long long time ago, like 12 years ago (ages in internet years) magic_quotes was a good idea but PHP and the PHP developers of the works have bascially been ignoring that once-useful idea for many years. There are lots of reasons it made sense, back then. Today, doesn't usually make sense to use the feature. Not sure if this helps you find some confidence but for sure, dont' worry about it. Funny, just check, it's deprecated anyway! See this: http://php.net/manual/en/security.magicquotes.php

Danny, Did you have any luck with turing off magic quotes? When I do this my backend just spins and the html editor won't load.

Hi XactWeb, It solved my problem. Just create a file and cal it .htaccess in that file put: php_flag magic_quotes_gpc Off Put this in the root of your domain or in your directory where you installed bt-server. (don't know what helped in my situation) Hope this helps and if it doesn't than I'm out of answers for you. Best Regards

Danny, I did try this with no luck and I do know I have magic quotes turned off for sure. I have other scripts that use other editors on that domain and they work fine. Mine is adding in extra code like \" in places of a quote. The more your save the more it duplicates. At this point I would rather have a html source box only without the wysiwyg editor.

@XactWeb: If the CKEditor is not working in your install, you can easily disabled it and just use a standard TEXT area. I have not done this before so I don't know the outcome but it should work fine? The CKEditor is used in in only one space, on the BT_screen_customHTML plugin. Open the /files/plugins/BT_screen_customHTML/index.php file. You'll see a javascript function that runs on the window.onload even. comment out this function to prevent the editor from converting the html text area on the screen to an editor. You may need to adjust the size of the html text area after doing this but I'll bet it works.

I know this is an old thread, but with BT Server 2.0 it is possible to replace CKEditor with another WYSIWYG. I have successfully done this with Custom Versions of CKEditor and a couple other WYSIWYGs. You can also just customize the one thats there, though i don't recommend it without backing up any files you edit. (I havent had the chance to play with this in a bit, but im also pretty sure this is the way to accomplish some cool customizations or make a snazzy plugin... I was using this to make a plugin that adds HTML5 canvas with preset HTML snippets. I also experimented with an Drag n Drop editor for form-building on the fly in an Ipad app)
