Restarting Outbreak's plugin registry: Please Read.

Thank you in advance for your time :) Now that the market is open, everyone is chomping at the bit to get new plugins released and others in the pipeline. We're going to start stepping on each others toes if we don't watch where we're going :) It's a democracy, and everyone can create whatever they want to. But in the essence of promoting a "Gentlemens Agreement" (apologies, Ladies) I'd like to propose that new plugins be registered with Outbreaks Plugin Registry: https://www.buzztouch.com/files/howtos/Plugin%20Wish%20List.pdf It doesn't mean you can't work on something already 'claimed' by someone else. But it will give you an idea of what's coming, and what's still needed. We're at a beginning stage of a system that (I believe) will experience explosive growth. How we handle it now will determine how smoothly things can go well into the future. I encourage everyone to use the list to show others what you're working on. It may save them time knowing it's already on the way, leaving them to create a different, needed function. At least, that's how I see it. Any thoughts? Cheers! -- Smug It also wouldn't be a bad idea to somehow find a way to have developers 'connect' to combine forces. The obvious example would be an Android Guru and an iOS Guru joining forces to create a plugin, and have the profits split. Or graphic artists. Or MySQL/PHP Programmers. You see where I'm going with this… Sometimes a good plugin is more than just the mobile code. Many other elements may be involved, and it would be nice to know who would be willing to play for pay.

@Smug: We should update the list (some of the plugins have already been developed). Jake

The list doesn't include who has dibs on what. Just who suggested the plugin.

I know it's not perfect. But it's more than we have going now. The list should be edited so that we can define what 'people want' and what 'someone is building'. Not sure who administers the list, but I'll ask around and see how it works out. Cheers! -- Smug

List should and can be a visible living document. Doesn't have to be constitution and amendment style. This is an important topic for the forums and it would be great to see everyone posting. For the most part all the members on here are family, true story. I'm getting help from folk, sure many others are. Always thought of BT as wordpress on steroids and for the modern day. I've mentioned DotNetNuke on many occasions as well. I firmly believe what is going on here is different, unique, the birth of a new dawn in sharing, building and discovering. BT puts us right at the front whether you want to learn or not. Will it help to have us brothers and sisters sharing, heck no. I'm having dinner but have more to say on his and the doc. Fish and chips. Lobster Mac n cheese. Do we need lobster and fish and chips? Should we moderate? New plugin market and methods mean this subject is relevant even more. The market, with reviews and price can dictate a lot. Mac n cheese and some lobster dish.

Maybe this registry could be in the form of a wiki? That way it can be edited by everyone, and history, versions, discussion, etc. is all captured. Also then no one person is stuck editing some file :)

This thing needs to be integrated into the Buzztouch site. I hate to say it, but nobody even looks at the How-To's. People just post on the forum. I may suggest this to David, but this is what I recommend should happen. 1) On the Plugin Market, you will be able to buy plugins, but at the top, there would be a big orange button that says, submit a plugin idea. 2) Only plugin developers would be able to see the list. The reason being is that if we get duplicated requests, we know its wanted. 3) A developer list has the same form type thing and this is going to be a list full of plugins currently in development. This would be shared as plugin developer info only. This would be destroying Outbreak's PDF, but it would mean there were more results. But I am more concerned about a plugin developers list. I want other plugin developers to know about what other developers have in mind.

This site has too many 'hidden' features that important things like this need to be made bolder and more obvious.

My last post was made after half a night out. I think what I was trying to say was that while this is a good idea for close family members it is something that is almost impossible to enforce for a large community and free market. Who's to say 2 of us don't see a Chupa Mobile component at the same time and one person has Chris1 help with the Control Panel and the other has Danny helping. We could end up with two almost identical plugins both made in complete honesty. Tricky one.

I don't really have a problem with 'competition', but I think it's a shame for two developers to be working on the same thing 'if they don't know about it'. I asked Susan about it, and she mentioned to me that this topic is on the agenda of the next managment meeting, so it'll be addressed in some fashion. Time will tell. Cheers! -- Smug

Just making a link to MrVanBeveren's recent post re Layout ideas for plugin page as some of the ideas I have mentioned there draw on some of the things mentioned here! http://www.buzztouch.com/forum/thread.php?fid=60334658312246E650A45D2&tid=60334658312246E650A45D2 Regard Paul :)

I read that. Good stuff, all of it. If you're not on the webinar for developers this week, I'll mention it when the topic comes up. Cheers! -- Smug

As y'all know, I am from the woods of WordPress where there is a healthy thriving plugin repository. Competition is good, it is healthy, it is fine to have nearly duplicate plugins. Darwinism will dictate which plugin continues into the future. One developer may be overcome with life events such that they cannot maintain the plugin, which allows the other plugin to continue forward. Another plugin might all of a sudden sprout a be set of features on its second release. It's all fine to have similarities. It will all get naturally sorted out over time. Somebody had taken Outbreak's list and had made a Google spreadsheet of it. Remember? What-who-where is it ... I got thrown under the bus by David Book on a recent BT Devs web conference, he outed me on my Boxes plugin. Going back to the salt mines to get that puppy released ... :-) -- Niraj

I agree with Niraj - if there is too much planned development of plugins it may result in less innovation. I've never made a plugin so don't have much weight in this discussion, but... Is it really a problem where multiple significantly overlapping plugins get developed at the same time? Seems to me that there are so many types of plugins that this would happen only rarely and it's not worth worrying about. I don't think the top plugin devs for WP try to chart out who's making what. They all just charge ahead in their own direction and yes there are similar plugins but better than not having any at all and the better ones are maybe better because the developer knows there are others that overlap.

Duplicated plugin isn't such a bad thing. When done properly, it can work well. An example would be: Menu with Image Menu Image Advanced
