Plugin reviews

Hi, As you know the plugin market has changed and developers can now submit their plugins directly. Without BT seal of approval we all rely on reviews and ratings to gauge the quality of the product we are about to buy. The fact is that there are very reviews around. I was wondering, is there a way to encourage users to leave more reviews? Maybe set up a follow up BT email to remind the user to rate or something similar? Just a thought. Farcat

Yep I'd love to see more reviews. There's no reason any plugin should have none.

I agree, my guess is that people forget or just don't think about it in the first place (my case). In the Apple app store you would read/write reviews because there are plenty of apps doing the same thing. On the BT plugin Market there is no such competition, the user just grabs what he can. Leaving reviews is not only a thumbs up to the developer but also a huge help for future buyers. I have bought loads of plugins that I haven't used yet, it might be a factor too. Maybe the website can be amended slightly so the "Leave a Review" link is more prominent?

I agree @Farcat, I am guilty of not leaving reviews and for similar reasons. Recently there was a strong debate in another thread about competition between authors developing similar plugins and I believe having more reviews would help people understand the differences there. I also think if there were more reviews, we would have a better insight into deciding if the plugins are going to do what we hope. Sometimes the only way to know is by buying them.

You’re right, Farcat, people forget or just don't think about it… Moreover, with the pending issues of BT3.0, we spend too much time struggling with rebellious plugins… I want to write reviews, as a thumbs-up to the developers and as a recommendation to potential users. I will, one day or another. As a non-coder, that’s all I can do for the community (with posts in the forum when I can be of any help). There are some amazing plugins I’d love to review and praise! There are even developers who enhanced their plugins when I made suggestions in PM. I’d really like to ‘renvoyer l’ascenseur’ as we say in French (‘send back the elevator’ => return the favor)… Last year, with the upcoming BT3.0 revolution and with the iOS 7 upgrade challenge, I had to stop publishing apps (my last app went live last May). I’ve been working on a new one since September but I still can’t finalize it. I submitted another one 2 days ago just to see if Apple validates it, as it’s based on the new core and on almost totally debugged plugins. I’m working on another one too, sort of showcase of some 60 plugins (this one is not supposed to be published, it’s some kind of debugging/experimenting tool I intend to use only as a demo for prospects). So you can be sure that, one day or another, I’ll have food for many reviews. And I hope these future reviews will help you and other members to make decisions, and will boost the sales of some plugins! Cheers Jack

Quite true Alan, I think you hit the nail on the head. The way things stand now, the developer description is a sales pitch and reviews would help the users decide. Jack, fantastic idea an app with a all the plugins to show potential customers! I might nick this idea ;) Chris, I know that this is not at the top of the priorities but it's just something to consider. Beside, I was hoping that just talking about it might help to get the ball rolling. ;) Farcat

I just signed up for BT membership bought a few plugins to get started and none of them work. I'm bummed. I should have checked them one at a time but I was anxious to get started. They are either not BT 3 comparable or iOS 7. The 2 biggies are menu with image pro and circular menu. Maybe I am doing something wrong but all my other plugins work like a charm.

I use advanced menu with image and I find it is pretty solid under BT 3.0 and IOS. Post your problems, we'll take a look.

Yep - Menu Image Advanced should be working fine, but if not post your problems on the forums and we'll get you squared away quick. Also, if you find any bugs with plugins, feel free to post them on http://www.buzz-tools.com

‘Menu with image pro’? You mean ‘Menu Image Advanced’? It’s not only for iOS, it’s for Android too! ‘Circular menu’? You mean ‘CircleView List Menu’? Same. For Android too! And both are BT3-friendly with iOS. Sorry, I can’t be of any help in the Android universe, I’m stuck in the iOS galaxy as of now. ;-) Anyway, don’t worry, you’ll find plenty of help right here in the forum! Just my advice: be hyper precise, we’re all swimming in a world where a plain quotation mark or a colon breaks all, I’m sure developers are more able to help if we give them the right details.

Ya its prob my fault lol. When I ad the advanced menu to my tabbed layout (as home page) it displays nothing but the background image no menu image or any rows or menu items. Not even a title. Was I supposed to install anything special? I redownloaded my project and cleaned/relaunched in Xcode. I am new so please forgive me if there is a certain way to post issues (copy paste code or something). I am willing to share my login or anything that will let you see my code.

Hi - you are posting just fine, there are no set rules in the forum, just say whatever you like. Presumably you re-downloaded *after* installing - have you added a few screens and descriptions to the menu? Set the colours? Something should be showing.

Took a quick look at your app, since you kinda gave permission. Looks like you're using the Menu with Image plugin (as opposed to Menu Image Advanced). Looks like that menu is setup okay, but I don't see where you link to it in your app (thus, no way to actually get to when the app is running).

Still nothing I just tried again. I have tabbed layout. The tabs show up and function. The main tab (menu with image advanced) just shows the background image the top bar is there but doesn't change when I change the color values nor does it show the title i inserted in the control panel. No menu list loads at all not even a background for the rows. Im puzzled. I also noticed it switches to the iPad background when I return from using the tab links? I am in Xcode iOS simulator. I tried re-downloading the project fresh clean and relauch in simulator.

RussFAR - Tried it again - noticed you updated the tab screen to point to the menu screen in question. (just FYI, it's Menu with Image, not Menu Image Advanced - that's a different plugin). The menu items came up for me, although there does seem to be a bug where it wouldn't let me scroll the list. I'll let Susan, the developer, know about this. Also, it's kinda hard to read the menu items on the background you've selected, but they're there. For the background image, it looks like you have the same image set for both small and large devices. The navbar title and color came through as well. What does your debug output look like?

Okay - turns out the no scrolling thing wasn't a bug - it's because you have the table set to prevent scrolling.

I must have issues with my Xcode. I still have nothing unless I switch to the simple list menu. The background I choose is a png cheeta print but there should be row color behind the text zoo its not hard to read. The background for large format is a jpg. In Xcode when I click onto a different tab, then click back to home (menu with image), it now shows the large format (jpg) background?. OK I mentioned I am new, like 1 day with Xcode and Im sorry but I know nothing of debugging. This may be my issue? I see the Debug tab but I don't what to do. thanks again for the help. I feel really green right now. I am used to knowing all about my field which is graphic/web design but I am a fast learner.

I did see the background image - not a header image though. But that's because you don't have "menupic.png" uploaded to your files section, so I couldn't include it. See this screenshot for where the debug area is located at. Copy and paste the text in that area here. https://www.dropbox.com/s/3ekot1752wtufzf/xcode-debug.png

Back to the subject of plugin reviews, I was thinking about auction sites like eBay. When a user wins an auction (or buys something at the "buy it now" price), he or she automatically receives an e-mail about it. Further, after a certain number of days, the user receives another e-mail asking if he received the product and suggesting he review the seller. Similar things happen when a user purchases something from a seller who sells through Amazon. Is there a way the BT plugin market could automatically send out an e-mail (or maybe just a Buzztouch Forum private message) to the buyer a few weeks after the purchase, reminding him or her to review the plugin(s) he or she bought? If possible, it would be nice if such a feature would include /not/ sending out an e-mail if a given user has already posted a review of a given plugin that he purchased.

Just some thoughts about reviews and Plugin Market… Do reviewers get points? They should. Remember that ‘More points = more cred. More cred = more help, more dev work (if you want it), and more free stuff from the BT gang’. Getting points when reviewing would be enticing. (Maybe it’s already the case but it’s not said in the above-mentioned BT quote.) Reviewers should be able to edit their commentaries. Sometimes plugins are getting enhancements and get better and better. Once I posted a review praising a plugin, giving some tips and ending with ‘No app yet on the App Store to show you the result, but on my development iDevices it looks great!’ I would change it now and give a reference. Of course, in this case, we’d need a link to all our reviews in our account panel so as to be able to follow-up. I don’t remember which plugins I did review. Another example: I’ve tested a very interesting plugin and I’d like to use and review it… but at the moment I’d give 0 star as it’s not been upgraded to BT3.0. I’d say ‘Don’t buy it!’ And if it gets an upgrade, I’ll edit my review, give it 5 stars and recommend it. In the Plugin Market, there should be sorting options: by date (creation/update), by number of reviews (= popularity), by alphabetical order. Not by stars as most have 5… Maybe by OS too, with iOS/Android compatible plugins on top. Of course, at the moment, priorities of the BT Wizards are set to debugging the last BT3.0 issues! Enhancements are less pressing ;-)

BTW... A link to all our reviews in our account panel, displaying how many plugins we reviewed, would be a good reminder...

@ResearchDepartment, good idea setting up an automatic email, it's so quick to forget and take the plugin for granted. @fusionsch, all your suggestions are very good mon ami, I hope that a certain Mr David is taking note (hint, hint) :) All in due time, of course. @RussFAR, good to hear your app is back on track. The truth is that this community is quite unique and many people will chip in to help you. The search tool isn't the best on the forum, for better results: - Go to Google.com - type "type:buzztouch.com my issue" (replace the words "my issue" with your question, obviously) It's very likely that your question has already been asked and answered. If in doubt make a post and help shall come running. Off to write plugin reviews now. Farcat

Hehe. One of my favorite plugin developers uploaded a new version of a plugin a few hours ago. Now a perfect version. He earned a 5-star review. (Guess who you are!)
