Apple Tech Talk - London, 17th December 2013..... some takeaways

Hi all, Last Tuesday, I attended the Apple Tech Talk in London. It was a one day session for 450 developers on the topic of developing apps for iOS7 (a bit like a mini WWDC). It was an excellent experience and I learned a ton of new stuff which I thought you folks might be interested in. The sessions covered everything from latest iOS7 features, developments in iTunes Connect, tips for marketing and distribution, animation and a one-on-one session with an Apple app reviewer to get feedback about my own apps. My session notes can be found at this Dropbox link and the document will be made available later on the How To's page. https://www.dropbox.com/s/783fl1cy95jop8m/iOS7%20Apple%20Tech%20Talk.pages I hope you find it useful - any question let me know. Happy reading! Derval Some key takeaways were: New features App Transfer - transfer the ownership of an app from one company to another is now possible, for example, if you sell your company Over-the-air download limit has been increased from 50mb to 100mb which means you can download a 100mb app without being connected to wi-fi An expanded volume purchase program for developers who are developing apps to schools/institutions is now available iTunes Connect - new features, for example the Kids Category - age appropriate apps New tier prices - you can charge $0.99c and €0.99c for the same app (the paid app is alive and well!) Basic traits for next gen apps: A7 - A lot of horse power! 64-bit desktop class performance (improved operating system). It is up to twice as fast and has up to twice the graphics power compared to its predecessor. M7 Motion Aware - Knows when people are walking running or driving (using the compass, gyroscope and accelerometer). iBeacon - location aware (especially indoors). iPad at a shop interacts with your iPhone. Apple is watching to see how the developer community will use this functionality Multi-tasking always ready feature Secure - Pass codes Data protection (Keychains thrown away after locked to prevent access). User Interface Design for iOS7 - focus is on Clarity, Deference and Depth Clarity: am I using words people understand? can people tell what my app does just by looking at it? can people use my app with little or no instruction? Deference: Does the interface call attention to itself? Does the interface compete with content? Can content be bigger and more central? Depth: Do people get lost or disoriented in my app? How can animation provide a sense of continuity? How do screens in my app spatially relate to each other?

@MacApple - sure was a ball!! Very slick presentations by the Apple team. Most of them were easy enough to follow even for the non-programmer. The user interface labs where you could get feedback about your own apps were very popular. You got 30 mins with one of the team flown in from Cupertino especially for the event. That was very cool!!

@Thomas - really felt for you that you couldn't make it to the event considering you were one of the lucky few to get a ticket! I can tell you you would have been the youngest there by far! Hopefully you'll get another chance to go.

@Sheri - you would have loved it!! Could have done with a few more women there too. I think I counted 4 or 5 out of 450 - mad, eh?!! Wall to wall men! Would you believe it though that the Apple employee who I had that 30 mins with to review my Irish dancing app was not only female but a dancer herself!! How lucky was that?!!

I made an accidental discovery with Derval's document. It is in Apple's Pages format. I happen to have Pages app on my iPhone. Opening that document with the Pages app allowed me to Share that doc with other apps. But first, Pages allowed me to convert the document into an ePub, then have it opened by iBooks app. That allows me to grow the font, change the background color to Sepia and adjust the brightness. Better yet, I can make bookmarks to remember my progress! That's mighty sweet. I love the power of ePub and how well Apple has made the ePub format be a first class citizen. -- Niraj
