Is it possible to put a 114x114 icon image for iphone instead of the 72x72?

is the 72x72 just as good quality as the 114x114 for the retina display?

You edit the default 114 x 114 and this cause it to crash?

When I establish my iPhone icon, I upload a 512x512 version of the icon, which gets resized by buzztouch, at a pretty decent resolution. That works well for me. Mark

You have to use a 72x72 for BT, you can add the 114 x 114 to xcode.

I was just able to upload a 512x512 icon in v1.5, select the entire thing (instead of cropping it), and hit OK. No problems!

Best practice though is to do your own resizing. Consider the 72x72 icon as a placeholder. Once you download the project you'll have three icons in your BT_images directory: icon_57.png; icon_72.png; and icon_114.png. Repleace each of these with icons you've created. Ideally you can to create your icon at 512x512 (which is what Apple requires for app submission). Then downsize and save at each of the other sizes. Make sure you are saving your files as png files. You can't just change the extension from .jpg to .png. @Mark - I've never tried uploading the 512. I'll have to give it a try and see if the resizes hold resolution.

Yes...it creates the icon for both iPhone and iPad...same icon, you just compile the app to support both platforms. Mark

Since were on the subject of icons. How do I get rid of the gloss or shine on the app icon?

@MGoBlue, I admit I'm not the most proficient person when it comes to graphics. My understanding has always been design at a larger resolution, and then scale down, which will preserve the image at the lower resolution. I see that you're suggesting that...but what's the best approach with the icon? Not to trust the BT resizer? Use something like GIMP or something and do the resize myself? Any best practices for this? Mark

@Mark - I tend to not trust anything but my good old PhotoShop program. I like to control all of my downsizing. But, then again, graphics and design is a big part of what I do for a living.

If you're interested, I ran a test for comparison purposes. I uploaded an icon @ 512x512 into BT 1.5 and downloaded the source code. Compared the BT-created icon_114.png with one I created by resizing in PhotoShop. Big difference in quality. You can see here: http://jc-evans.com/uploads/bt-compare.jpg

Hi MGoBlue, Very interesting! The differences are quite obvious! In this case, though, would you advocate designing at the higher resolution of 512px, and then using that one to resize to all smaller ones? Is that the generally accepted method for graphic design? Mark

Mark - Sorry for the tardy reply. for some reason I don't get email notices from BT when comments are posted. I have to remember to go look at posts. As to your question, yes, best design practice is to create at the maximum resolution and then downsize. So I always create the icon at 512x512 first. Similarly, I create my iPad graphics first then downsize and do the iPhone graphics.

So many things are easier with PS. Some of the galleries that I have 100's of images in I just whack with a script once a week via PS to resize.

Happy Monday buddy, haven't been on as much last two weeks. Still trying to dip in twice a day though. That should all change soon. Off to get paint brush out, again!
