BtGo!, BtCentral, BtCore, and a new Bt Website. Finally!

Hi gang, This is a short post, see my Blog Post for more details, screenshots, and all sorts of other fun stuff. PLUGIN DEVELOPERS WILL WANT TO READ THE POST ALL THE WAY THROUGH. Use this forum post to discuss after seeing the blog here: https://www.buzztouch.com/blog/2014/06/btgo-btcore-btcentral-and-a-new-btwebsite/

Nice! do you have is there a screenshot of the new plugin page or is it still under development? Is the reason all of the first plugins are included in every download, that we can add a new screen of one of those plugins in bt core, without having to upload a new app?

@CMCOFFEE: Hey there. I'm going to try to stay off this post (answering questions) becuase their going to be endless! But, figured I would start off with this one - and by saying that. Ha. 1) Other screenshots and other goodes are intentionally not in the list of images I shared. For a few reasons. Expect to "see more and have more" first because your a Plugin Developer. LOTS of folks will see these images and we want to be careful what we battles we start. You get it. 2) Including the "standard plugins" has a few benefits, you mentioned one. Mostly it's about how much difficulty new site visitors have understanding the process. The biggest idea here is that we're trying to re-invent what we once had - an easy process. We've gotten away from making this easy. Sadly. Naturally though, time tends to change things and every now and again we need to change back. Focussing on helping new folks is our core idea. If new folks don't find success, none of us do! So, allowing somebody to "see the goodness" without having to even understand what a plugin is a super important. "Click here, do this, see that" kinda thinking. Additionally, it's always been a personal goal of mine to NOT COMPLETE WITH PLUGIN DEVELOPERS. As long as my name is in the market this will be tough. The Plugin Market is for plugin developers, not me. I want to focus on making cool software, not cool plugins. I want to focus on helping Plugin Developers make better stuff, not make stuff for them. Again, I think you get this. Thanks for the interest, none of this would be worth it without it :-)

@nadthevlad: Bald head, too funny. The content scrolls over the background image so we can see EVERYONE'S BALD HEAD, and everything else. Funny how many baldy's are Bt'ers. Soooo laughing. Between the bald heads and the bulging bellies, all will be well! d.

The new site looks good and the changes sound like they are necessary and change is good even if it means a load of late nights that run you into the ground. Looks like BT have been thrown into the 22nd century, never mind the 21st century. Great job, look forward to the self hosting, even though I just updated to Core3.0, timing, lol!

My guess is Android will come but a good deal later. Otherwise the changes won't effect Android any more than iOS, which won't be much. Most of the changes will be to the website/control panel. But who knows - David may have some cool things up his sleeve. Looking forward to the new plugin market and the streamlined php API - much needed!

I know this is exciting, but should I be this worried? I'm having flashbacks of BT3.0. Maybe it was just me, but the last upgrade threw me for a loop. My main concerned is that I paid $$$ to have an awesome and complex plugin developed. Plus I was fortunate enough to have David Book himself do some late night coding on it to make it more awesome! (How cool is that?) Right now, after many, many months of tweaking and $ the plugin is a thing of beauty and works great, and the app is in the app store. Now I have a pit in my stomach wondering how much it will be affected by 4.0 and when will I know:/

Hopefully it won't mess much up. Apps already in the App Store should be fine anyway. It's really only newly downloaded projects that will be different. I'll help you out though Sharon - no worries!

@David I hope you keep the basic PlugIns like Menu Simple up to date with the fast moving changes with iOS7 and Android. (I have a couple of threads going about Menu Simple, 1) how the menu rows are clear in Android, but solid black in iOS7 - which they should be per the code I wrote. 2) And dataURL, which works fine for one childtems, but I'd like it to do something more akin to PHP include(). https://www.buzztouch.com/forum/thread.php?fid=11867E527C4649D977D6D75&tid=11867E527C4649D977D6D75 ) I would like MY Location Map to have an expanded menu in the callout bubble. Perhaps you can hand-off Location Map to a Developer would could (help us) add additional features for us, or expand the documentation so we can fiddle with it - without breaking it. (Expand the menu so I can call other Plugins like take a photo at a map location, and upload with the Location title or Lat/Lang.) I wouldn't worry about competing with PlugIn developers. Your PlugIns don't compete with Plug In developers. A lot of plugins here are for iOS OR Android, but not both. That's kind of meaningless, for us App developers who want to serve iOS AND Android customers. Why should we buy a plugIn for one, that isn't also available for the other?

David, you mention that we can go ahead and get our plugins ready for BT 4.0 ahead of time. What will the new icon size be (1024?) and what name will be given to the icon file? I'd love to get my plugins updated to be 4.0 compatible :) Thanks. -Dave

Onward and upward...cool stuff for sure! Quick Google search of the names: BtGo! = an acronym for Bar-Tailed Godwit (bird species) BtCore = an Australia Share fund managed by BT Investments BtCentral = http://www.btcentral.org.uk/ BTCentral specializes in Web Development services. We tend to use XHTML, CSS, JavaScript/AJAX, the PHP programming language, and the MySQL Database engine.

I asked the question of BtCentral being mobile-friendly at the Devcon today. The answer from the good Book was "nope, I would rather see a BtCentral app". ( the quote is a paraphrase of an actual quote ) Now that BtCentral has a true API, it can certainly be connected to another client, such as a mobile app. -- Niraj

This looks like a great step forward for Buzztouch and I for one am looking forward to it. I am sure that to make the whole proposition more attractive to newbies and ease the transition for the existing community is an obvious part of the way ahead. I'd like to suggest a couple of things that might help. 1) I don't know how many people turn away because they can't figure ou the first few steps. Up to date and slightly more comprehensive new-starter help information would be good. As a small example, re-instate instructions for new users in the IOS project download. 2) New features are of course always welcome, but please maintain backwards compatibility of plug-ins and core features to how it used to be. For example, I used to use html doc plug-in on android in BT 2.0, but the way it changed for 3.0 meant I had to find an alternative for my existing apps as well as new ones - I used to use it a lot. 3) In the 2.0 to 3.0 transition, some things got broken and have stayed broken and there are still some long-standing core features that regularly attract feedback in the forums. I fully appreciate we need to look forward, but please could some of the long standing issues of BT 3.0 be fixed in 4.0? And if you need beta testers, count me in.

Hi gang, lost to consider in all of these posts. Good stuff. Needed to make sure and clarify this: @piggilypoo: "I'm confused, what is BtGo!" @CMCOFFEE: "an app to create an app on the go" BtGo! is NOT an app to create an app. It's easy to make lots of assumptions about what it is and what it isn't. In fact, I've heard so many "this is what BtGo! is" I giggle sometimes. BtGo! was created to help peeps get started "playing with their phones" , "getting creative" etc. Naturally we (experienced Bt folks) can draw some conclusions about what this means. We're intentionally not revealing all the features of the first release because we ourselves are still unclear about what will be approved and what won't (by Apple). Rest assured, BtGo! will become much more than it is when it appears in the App Store "at first." We all know this. Balancing our disruptive approach to things, our creativity and ideas, and Apple's agenda is the key here. We'll get what we all want - in time :-) d.

Ah Apple - recently I submitted an app, and then had it approved with about 15 keywords removed..and they were relevant keywords too! The App Store is so awesome, but sometimes it's hard not to get frustrated with the nitpicking and randomness of the review process. Hey David, (if you happen to be reading this post) the one thing I'm wondering is...will the forums be getting updates as well? The Buzztouch forums are...unique, in the way that there are no "bumps", no off-topic section, etc. It's interesting since Buzztouch in particular has such a strong community - I haven't even met any of you, and I still feel like this is the only message board that I've frequented that has so many genuinely cool, interesting, and smart people. An area of the forums where people can just talk about anything seems like a cool idea to me...of course I can also understand the other side, where that might possibly detract from the main focus of the site, which is apps Regardless of all that, the new changes sound great! Proud to have been a member of this site for so long, and it's been so cool to see the evolution from then to now
