iOS7, XCode 5.0, Core, Plugins...

Hi Gang, Just an update post to let everyone know the plan / progress on the Buzztouch Core v3.0 for iOS. We released the 3.0 for Android a few weeks ago and need to get the "matching" 3.0 package out for iOS. We've been waiting for the public release of iOS7 to get going on this full speed ahead. We've been working on it since the private-beta release (iOS 7 was released to devs a few months back) but it's not just iOS7 that we were waiting for... XCode 5.0 has been released and we've also been playing with all the changes it includes. In some ways this is more significant than the iOS 7 release to our gang because we're all so used to open in Xcode > run > test. There are some big changes to Xcode and as such the project downloads you get from your control panel's need to change. This is the idea behind the v3.0 Core for iOS. We figured this would happen. There are all sorts of differences in Xcode 5.0 vs previous versions and we're getting the project updated to it opens-nicely in Xcode 5.0. If you haven't played with Xcode 5.0, grab it, it's cool. YOU WILL NEED XCODE 5.0 TO COMPILE PROJECTS THAT USE THE 3.0 CORE YOU'll BEGIN TO SEE IN YOUR CONTROL PANELS. To summarize...we are... --coding away at the 3.0 for iOS release. --coding away at getting the 3.0 for iOS release to play nicely in Xcode 5.0 --Updating all the plugins, again! Yup, Android a few weeks ago, iOS this time. --Keeping track of misc. gotchas and bugs we've been hearing about (both for iOS and Andoid). These are mostly related to individual plugins but not always. --Working on automating the plugin market so devs can submit plugins without the approval process. The delays in this front are related to the items above. Devs need to know how the new 3.0 Cores work for iOS and Android before they submit anything. Right?

Great update David, thanks. I've been holding off on Xcode 5, but I'll have to jump in now. Here's a side item I'm wondering about: Safari Push Notifications. https://developer.apple.com/notifications/safari-push-notifications/ I know it doesn't really relate directly to the Buzztouch core products, but as there are Push services built in to Buzztouch, this would be a great companion service for our Apps. Keep up the awesome work! -William

Very cool! Some of you, in your attempt to upgrade to the latest Xcode, may find that you can't, because you're running an older version of Mac OS X, like Lion, instead of the required Mountain Lion. You may be tempted to update to Mountain Lion so you can get the new Xcode, but I'd suggest you wait for a month if you can! Rumors are that the end of October will see the release of Mac OS X Mavericks, which is the next version of the OS. So, if you have to update, instead of updating twice, consider waiting so you just have to update once (it's cheaper that way as well). That assumes, of course, that your current level is directly updateable to the newer level! http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2424110,00.asp Just something to consider! Mark

Thank you for the update David...appreciate how proactive the BT gang is. Very excited to be able to build in the IOS7 environment utilizing Xcode 5. Have some client apps I'm building with deadlines, it's great to hear about advances and when they are ready.

Hi, I'm having sudden trouble with Xcode (only in the last 24 hours) - before and after updating to 5.0. I was hoping updating would solve it! I'll compile the app in BT and transfer it to Xcode like normal. It was working fine yesterday morning, but now I run the simulator it comes up black. It says the build was successful...but still black/blank. It also won't let me add a jpg to the image folder. Any helpful suggestions? Pretty please? Thanks heaps, Jen

HI again. Never mind. I just found that somehow the folder options had changed from 'Create groups' to 'Create folder references'. I changed this and it now works. The new xcode has messed around with my app looks though... :( But at least I can view it! Thanks anyway! Jen

Just wondering.. are all these exciting new versions the reason why I keep getting "there was a problem parsing configuration data" messages? (Xcode 5, iOS7) The only references I can find to this error on the forum suggest that it's because of apostrophes in menu items, but I don't have any of those... if anyone has any suggestions that would soooo appreciated.

There seems to be some confusion. The existing code will still work fine for 90% of the apps built using Buzztouch. If you have menu screens, it may look a little funny if you're using the rounded menus - changing to square menus will work fine until the new core comes out. Other than that, there shouldn't be many problems. The new core will give us some cool new features of course, but that's just bonus. :) If you're trying to cover all iOS devices, build using the current Buzztouch iOS Core and you should be just fine. Make sure to run it on both iOS6 and iOS7 simulators just to be sure the cosmetics look okay, but otherwise tell your client "no problem - I'd be happy to do that for you". (And maybe charge them a little extra!) Now, if by "all" they mean iOS 4.x devices or even 5.x devices - well that could be an issue depending on what plugins you're using. Most are compatible going back to 4.x, but a few are 6.x only. As for the 3.5" vs 4", most plugins should look fine on both. There could be some plugins using .xib files that aren't configured properly for 4" screens, but most should be fine.

Hey Chris, while we are on the topic, the only way I found with BT to cover 3.5" and 4" screens, is basically build it with 4" screen in mind, but on the 3.5", it basically just cuts off my screen the last 1/2". I try to design with this in mind, and just put some sort of filler content in that last 1/2" that doesn't matter if the user sees it or not... but is there some sort of "shrink to fit" function that I'm not aware of that will display the FULL screen, regardless of the device's screen size?

Hi all, I wanted to post a giant "thank you" to @chris1 for helping me solve the "problem parsing configuration data" error I was getting when attempting to load map locations from a dataURL pointing to a MySQL database. It was nothing to do with versions as I initially thought, but it was also nothing to do with apostrophes in menus, which is pretty much the only other cause that I could find discussed in the forums. It was a php issue (not returning JSON) that gave the error message. If anyone is interested in seeing @chris1's solution, please msg me. And thanks again, Buzztouch is indeed a happy & helpful place. I'm looking forward to spending more time here. :) Cheers.

It seems the change from vers.1.0 to vers.3.0 in my control panel is, oddly enough, unrelated and unexplainable. Any update on the status of the actual 3.0 update for iOS 7?

Definitely interested in a status update here as well - no rush of course..I can't imagine how much work is involved with overhauling the entire package & plugins. I imagine they are taking the extra time to make it as issue free as possible

Don't worry guys. It really hasn't been hat long since iOS 7 was released to the public. The Buzztouch team has to go through every plugin and the core itself so we don't have to. It's like this every time Apple has an update. David and his team are coding away as we eat our dinner, spend time with our families and sleep at night (or during the day). It will be ready soon and we'll be churning out our apps as if there was never a problem to begin with. We just need to patient so us non coders can make apps as if we were pros. Thanks for everything David and the Buzztouch team!

We are all aware of the complexities of an iOS change and the challenges it brings to David and his team to get all items properly ironed out. One thing for sure - all new BT Cores have been exceptional and worked without any major issues....but I do understand that getting to grips and ensuring everything works well takes time...... I have a bug in my APP that needs resolving but waiting anxiously for BT Core 3 and although need it urgently, will not bother the team as I am aware that no news means they are hard at work. Guys it is not the end of the world the current BT core still works albeit with some hiccups...give them some space - I am sure we shall hear from them as soon as something is available. Keep up the good work BT Team !

Sorry for the delay in updating everyone. It is certainly unintentional, and you of course deserve to be kept "in the loop". This update is a special one since we had the major Android core update recently, followed by Apple's new iOS. And it happens that we're taking this opportunity to make some changes to the control panel (both at BT.com and Self Hosted) at the same time. These changes serve two main purposes. 1. Add some functionality to the core project, thanks to advancements in the respective operating systems. and 2. Add some features that will make all you Power Users very happy, and basically allow you to create your projects with more efficiency than ever before! Don't worry - the main functionality of the control panel isn't changing to the point that you'll have to re-learn anything. Rather, we're simply adding some extra goodness. (Zero calories, no gluten). These changes in the control panel have also been tied into the new plugin submission process that we're working on. So its the combination of these three advancements that have led to the delay. But trust me, they are going to be well worth the wait. A birdie tells me we're a few days away. No promises, but I'm crossing my fingers right alongside all of you! Thanks for the patience! -Chris

Much appreciated @Stobe, can't wait! One question. I am still on 2.1.8 - will the next release mean upgrading from 2.1.9? Can I upgrade straight to it from 2.1.8? I've been holding off making changes to my control panel as I'm thinking it might be better to take a deep breath and do it all in one go.

@AlanMac Until its all ready to go I can't answer with 100% assurance, but I'm almost positive you should be ok going straight from 2.1.8 to the new "3.0.0". -Chris

Hello, I use the splash plugin on all my apps. Prior to updating to xcode 5 I would use png image sizes 320x480 for small devices and 640x960 for large with no issues. No that all the simulators are 'retina' in xcode 5 I am using 640x1136 but the images are now 'zoomed in' on the simulators in Xcode instead displaying the full screen and preserving the ratio. Any thoughts on how to correct this? If I use 320x480, it shows correctly, however I know if I use this size it will look like crap on a retina phone. Is this one of the plugin issues that will be corrected when v3.0 drops?

Hello JA Nice to see another SoCal person in the BuzzTouch community! :-) I can help, several solutions are possible. Rather than pollute this post, lets take care of it another way. Private message me by clicking on my name and look on left menu. I cannot get to your profile because of the J&A. Perhaps simplify your name to solve it? -- Niraj

@Sassy, The new core is being "beta" tested, and a few bugs are being squashed. @simplecodesimpleapp, yes. The new core will be available in all control panels.

Looking forward to it. I learned so much by exploring the old iOS core, so a new core is incredibly valuable.

I'm just gonna go ahead and start the chant. 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! And if you guys are anything like Apple.... that gives you about 400 days! I know apple has changed so much about how views are fundamentally created in iOS7. (if you watch their WWDC 2013 videos you will get a clue, based on how many sessions were dedicated on these changes (great way to learn all the awesome tricks for amazing apps btw)) So I can't even imagine the amount of ground level rework that is needed to get things working right. I can say this though... it NEEDS to take a while if its gonna work properly... and without issues. So @BT....take your time...get it right... we ain't GOing nowhere. Shipping a broken core is a gazillion times worst than shipping a reliable core (that feels tardy for some). And I for one prefer that approach. So while the updates are nice... Let priorities be priorities. OK...Back to work... nothing to see here... and oh yeah...I'm calling it from now. 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! 2014! €

Exact dates are hard to come by these days for a variety of good reasons. But I'll say this, we're getting a lot closer. My sense is that the plugin market will probably be finished before the iOS7 core, but David also likes to surprise me. :) Be patient. Good things are on their way. And yes, 2014 will rock.
