proximity alert badges? (iOS)

A clients wants me to incorporate a proximity alert badge to his app. So if someone's driving along and gets to within, say 5 miles of them, a badge would come up (whether their app's open or not) and say something like Come to Joe's Cafe for $199 breakfast today only Any ideas on how I could incorporate this? I guess the alert would say special deal at Joes with a cancel/view button...and the view buton would then open the app and take you to more info on the deal? (iOS, buzztouch 1.5)

Subscribing to this thread, should be interesting. Assume you have managed to get push notifications working?

Does sound interesting. Apple WILL NOT trigger a Push Notification based on location information for this exact reason. Imagine how troubling it would be if all the Joes Diner's on the street pushed ads to my phone everytime I drove by? LOL. The idea does have merit and I totally understand the power of it. In fact, Apple themeselves do say you can use location information + push notifications to 'power location based advertising.' Um, whats the difference? An ad from some distant Viragra dealer popping up on my phone is OK but a push notification from my buddy Joes coffee shop (another ad) is not? Whatever. So...not sure how you're going to constantly monitor somebodies location (battery would suck it dry super fast) to pull this off. Keep us posted if you figure out a way.
