My new favorite ad network - AppLovin

Just a quick post to tell you guys that if you advertise in your app, you should definitely give Applovin a shot. I have been a big RevMob fan, but I've been getting increasingly frustrated with their missed installs, spastic eCPM's, and odd lack of communication with publishers. With Applovin I've made $1,737.85 in the last 30 days with a $3.79 average eCPM. For the last 7 days my eCPM has been $5.53. check em out - https://www.applovin.com/index If anybody decides to give them a shot, I would greatly appreciate if you could send an email to [email protected] simply letting him know that Jonathan Brake referred you. cc my email address - [email protected]

I've got applovin in some apps with low traffic and the ads stuck deep in the menus and still earn a bit. I like the pop-ups too, they've got a nice look to them. Just a bit hesitant to replace airpush on any high traffic apps at the moment. Have you been running for more than a month? Is it consistant?

Applovin's been here on for a while and i was quiet hesitant about it to include it in my apps mostly because it reads your contact details. So i was a bit skeptical about what users might think about it. Few days before i had a chance to have a look at the applovin console of one of our BT fellow member. He has only couple of apps and yet he has managed to earn as much as $800 in 2 months. I think nonetheless this ad network is atleast worth trying than revmob.

Yeah they are awesome. Payments on time and like Absentia said the epm is great. I have been surprised with the android side as well. I guess the income depends on your app target and you can now cross promote your apps that have the applovin installed.

@raveyd . I don't think for android there is a good or equivalent ad network like airpush. I have applovin alongside a few apps with no issues.

@Asentia How many downloads a month represents the dollar amount you have received and can I download your apps? I really want to see your apps so I can understand how to do this effectively. I will definitely use you as a referral and send [email protected] an email. Please tell me the download numbers for these apps. I need to understand what kind of apps to build and place into the market and how many apps I need to produce for this kind of return? Please help with these statistics info I want to get started immediately. I am going to sign up right now Thank you Joe

@Absentia Thanks for the info. I have been looking for an advertising tool for my apps. However, do you know what products and/or services are being promoted? My apps are all education apps and my target audiences are the teenagers in my classroom and 5 & 6 year-olds in my wife's classroom. I would love to use Applovin if it would be appropriate. Any information you could give would be greatly appreciated.

@bfoutty, I use ad networks extensively, and I know a lot of them allow you to filter out 18+ ads, but I can't think of any sort of advertising that would be appropriate for 5 and 6 year olds. I mean, the purpose of advertising is to get the user to buy something or install something, to me neither of those things should be put in the hands of children, but of course, the decision is yours. fwiw, the majority of ad networks have probably 90% of the same advertisers, so you'll see for example, Candy Crush Saga being promoted on every network.

@raveyd - I've been using them for over three months and the eCPM has been very consistent..it has actually gone up quite a bit in the last couple of weeks @bonzo - I can only help with iOS so hopefully that's what you're using. The documentation on their site is really easy to follow - https://www.applovin.com/integration#iosIntegration - there is one buzztouch-specific step that differs from the online documentation. Where it tells you to use the line [ALInterstitialAd showOver:self.view.window]; to call an interstitial, use this line instead - [ALInterstitialAd showOver: [application.windows lastObject]]; @bodacious media - I currently only have AppLovin running in one app. You can check it out in the iOS app store (it's free). The app is call "Quiz - One Direction Edition". Applovin provides banners and interstitials, but my app is only using their interstitials. The ads have been live in that particular app since Feb 11, and since then it's been downloaded 344,957 times. To be more specific - Feb 11-Mar 11 = 140,966 downloads Mar 11 - Apr 11 = 110,125 downloads Apr 11 - May 11 = 72,462 downloads As you can see the app is continually declining in popularity, but it's still doing well. It was initially in the top 10/top 20 free trivia category for quite a while, but now it hangs around #50. @Dragon007 - check out the official documentation and let me know if you get hung up on anything - https://www.applovin.com/integration#iosIntegration @Bfouty - I have seen all kinds of different ads - the majority is of course game advertisements, but I've also seen some dating app ads (zoosk) If there is a particular type of ad you don't want showing, I'm pretty sure you can contact them and ask them to filter those ads out. They aren't interested in serving irrelevant ads so they'll probably be happy to get rid of them for you

Have any of you guys had any luck getting the interstitials going? I've been trying to get them up and running in a new app, but they wont show for some reason. They work fine in my other app though...strange

@absentia - your one direction app looks great!! I know that you went sort of the same route I did with RevMob and its interesting to see you aren't using them anymore, in favor of AppLovin. Would you be open to me calling you and picking your brain about some things you are doing? I think you have a great concept going!! You can PM me if you can talk on the phone and we cans set it up.

@Daniel - sorry I must have missed your post here. Thanks a lot! I haven't written off RevMob completely quite yet. I still think that their ad link unit is awesome, and I still have their interstitials on pause in all of my apps just in case. Feel free to send me a pm @BuzzingSteve - a better guide than the one on the Applovin website? They do have a wiki page with an integration tutorial which is a bit more descriptive - http://wiki.applovin.com/index.php/IOSSdkGettingStarted let me know how far that gets you - I can help you out if you're stuck on anything

For the interstitial - I use the following line of code in the applicationDidBecomeActive method of the appDelegate.m - [ALInterstitialAd showOver:[application keyWindow]]; For the banners - The tutorial tells you to create a new view in the .xib file, but I looked at the sample project and found out how to just call the banner programatically. Paste the following method after the viewWillAppear method in whichever plugin's .m file you want to have the banner showing. - -(void)viewDidAppear:(BOOL)animated{ [super viewDidAppear:animated]; [BT_debugger showIt:self theMessage:@"viewDidAppear"]; // Create new AdView adView = [[ALAdView alloc] initBannerAd]; // // (Optional) Position the ad at the bottom of screen. By default // it would be postitioned at (0,0) // CGFloat y = self.view.frame.size.height - 50; CGFloat width = [UIScreen mainScreen].bounds.size.width; adView.frame = CGRectMake(0, y, width, 50); // (Mandatory) Add the ad into current view [self.view addSubview: adView]; // (Mandatory) Trigger loading of the new ad. [adView loadNextAd]; }

Hey Elaine, how has your eCPM been since writing that article? Mine has crashed quite a bit - it used to be $4-$5 now it's $1-$2. Obviously this is just a case of advertisers bidding lower..I was just wondering if you were seeing the same numbers

@mysps. I got as far as Step 4 in adding AppLovin to my app, but in Step 5 they mention a method I couldn't find in my [appname]_appDelegate.m file in the BT_Config folder. I was hoping to get a little hand-holding in integrating AppLovin :-) Also, their steps assume you know how to make certain changes, such as in Step 6. With the info from our esteemed @Absentia, combined with the steps from AppLovin, I was hoping for a clearer guide. Less confusion, easier integration, means more adoption :-) I hope I get this resolved tonight. I was really hoping to push out the app update tomorrow, so I can focus my weekend on my next app and eBook :-) Cheers

Perfect.. You're almost there. In xCode: Open > BT_Config You'll see all of the files in that folder. Open the only delegate file. appname]_appDelegate.m. Scroll down until you see all of the #imports and add this at the bottom of those: #import "ALSdk.h" Next Search for this: //didFinishLaunchingWithOptions It should be after the last @synthesize line You will see: //didFinishLaunchingWithOptions... -(BOOL)application:(UIApplication *)application didFinishLaunchingWithOptions:(NSDictionary *)launchOptions{ Right under this line copy: [ALSdk initializeSdk]; Proceed to step 6 Head over to the main panel of xCode and look for Targets then click the tab Build Settings. After that you search at the top linker: You'll see Other Linker Flags. Click the plus sign and add: -all_load -ObjC Next Step 7 Interstitial Ads and/or Banners Follow the instructions from Absentia above. I hope this helps.

@mysps. In step 6, this is the part I was a bit confused. When you say "Click the plus sign and add", do you mean click on "Add Build Setting"? If I do this, it creates a User Defined setting. Is this what we want? Cheers

OK, I think I figured out how to add the "-all_load -ObjC" to "Other Linker Flags" :-) LOL. Let me know if I'm off with the steps below: - you have to double-click "Other Linker Flags" - then click "+" - enter "-all_load -ObjC" - click back to the editor window in XCode Onto Step 7 with code from @Absentia above :-)

@Absentia. When I paste in the code below into my [appname]_appDelegate.m: [ALInterstitialAd showOver:[application keyWindow]]; I had to also paste in the following import at the top of [appname]_appDelegate.m to remove errors: #import "ALInterstitialAd.h" But, when I paste in the rest of the code below after the viewWillAppear method in a plugin's .m file (e.g. the quiz plugin), I get the error "Use of undeclared identifier viewDidAppear". Any suggestions? Thanks! -(void)viewDidAppear:(BOOL)animated{ [super viewDidAppear:animated]; [BT_debugger showIt:self theMessage:@"viewDidAppear"]; // Create new AdView adView = [[ALAdView alloc] initBannerAd]; // // (Optional) Position the ad at the bottom of screen. BTW, the ads are now showing on main screen (menu with image plugin) when loading the app. I'd like to only show the full screen ads (Interstitial?) when someone navigates to a different screen (menu with image plugin) from the main screen, even though the plugin is the same. Have you done this? i.e. load the interstitial only for certain screens, rather than certain plugins? Cheers

OK, guys, so I think I've got things working the way I wanted. Whoohoo :-) In case anyone else wants to know what I did and repeat the process, this is just a variation on what @Absentia has posted. I wanted the full-screen ads to show only at the beginning of the quizzes screens when someone starts a new quiz. I had made the quizzes an in-app purchase for my BC Tech app, but with this update, the Quizzes will be free, but users will see a full-screen ad first before starting the quiz...a compromise, i.e. feature is free, but you gotta see the ad first. Rest of the app is the same, except for using the newer version of Scringo 2.2.2 which fixes some bugs: Add the following into the [appname]_appDelegate.m - add AppLovin imports along with the others at the top: #import "ALSdk.h" #import "ALInterstitialAd.h" - initialize the AppLovin SDK, by add the code "[ALSdk initializeSdk];" in the didFinishLaunchingWithOptions method, as below. The AppLovin site says to put this in the "applicationDidFinishLaunching" method, which does NOT exist in our [appname]_appDelegate.m. I've tried to ask them to create some Buzztouch specific instructions, but @Absentia has been helping with that so thanks to him. //didFinishLaunchingWithOptions... -(BOOL)application:(UIApplication *)application didFinishLaunchingWithOptions:(NSDictionary *)launchOptions{ //AppLovin Code [ALSdk initializeSdk]; - that's it. I did not want to show a full-screen ad when a user starts the app. Add the following into the BT_screen_quiz.m to show a full-screen ad whenever someone starts a new quiz: - add AppLovin import at the top along with the other imports: #import "ALInterstitialAd.h" - add the following code in the viewDidAppear method: [ALInterstitialAd showOver:self.view.window]; - and that's all folks! I didn't want any banners so didn't bother with the other code. Cheers Steve

No worries. Hope you had a relaxing time :-) But, the rest of your code after the viewWillAppear method (which I didn't use) still returns the error "Use of undeclared identifier viewDidAppear". You might want to post a fix in case anyone wants to use it. Cheers

there's a good chance it's a case of there being one too many, or one too few curly brackets. As long as the the viewDidAppear method is separate from the viewWillAppear method and they both have all of the right opening and closing brackets in place, it should work

Hi Absentia, Trying to get the banners to work in my app. Interstitials work fine. I used the code specified by you above in my .m plugin file, and I got a couple of warnings: -In line "adView = [[ALAdView alloc] initBannerAd];", i receive this warnings "Receiver ALAdView is a forward class, and corresponding @Interface may not exist" "Instance Method -InitBannerAd not found (return type defaults to id)" -And in line "[adView loadNextAd];", i receive this warning "Instance Method -loadNextAd not found (return type defaults to id)" And when run, banners do not appear. I´ve included the corresponding imports #import "ALSdk.h" #import "ALInterstitialAd.h" Can you spot the problem?? Thanks, -Pancho

Any recent feedback on AppLovin earnings. I am struggling with Revmob earnings that have slipped drastically and don't want to switch over to somebody else and have the same problem. Dave

Hi Pancho, I'm having the same exact issue as you. Have you found a solution? Thanks, David

Hi shak77, I got tired of trying. But I´m retaking this issue with the guys at Applovin Monday. Also, I integrated revmov, easy to do. Unfortunately, I´m reading a lot bad reviews with them going really down in their banner eCPMs. I´m also thinking in using Apple´s iAds for ad banners given that they have good fill rates. As soon as I have an answer from Applovin, I´ll post here. Regards,

@Pancho, sorry I'm just getting to you on this - I was busy when I saw the email a week ago, then I forgot about it :( I'm pretty sure I can help you out with this. You are getting this error ---- "Receiver ALAdView is a forward class, and corresponding @Interface may not exist" "Instance Method -InitBannerAd not found (return type defaults to id)" ---- because you aren't using the right import. I'm not sure if I specified this above but you need to use #import "ALAdView.h" Another note - the banner code works best when it is in the viewDidAppear method. If there is no viewDidAppear method, then you can just make one - here is the complete code for the banner inside of the viewDidAppear method (there are a few changes, so use this one instead of the one I posted originally) - -(void)viewDidAppear:(BOOL)animated{ // Create new AdView adView = [[ALAdView alloc] initBannerAd]; // // (Optional) Position the ad at the bottom of screen. By default // it would be postitioned at (0,0) // CGFloat y = self.view.frame.size.height - 6; CGFloat width = [UIScreen mainScreen].bounds.size.width; adView.frame = CGRectMake(0, y, width, 50); // (Mandatory) Add the ad into current view [self.view addSubview: adView]; // (Mandatory) Trigger loading of the new ad. [(id)adView loadNextAd]; }

@Absentia, that works! Thanks! Question- Is there any way to customize the ads that are showing. I'm using this on a sports app and would like to try to find ads that would appeal to the typical sports fans.

How well is Applovin paying? Initial reports were positive, but it seemed like the earnings may have dropped. Is that the case or are the earnings still strong?

I'm going to give AppLovin another go - hopefully can integrate into an iOS app like @Buzzing Steve did. This is exactly how I want it to work in an iPhone app I've just finished.

@BuzzingSteve- Even i could not follow the step number 6. Its a bit confusing. When i expand the "Other Linker Flags" i get 3 options- Adnoc, Debug and Release. Should i put the "-all_load-ObjC" in one of those fields? When i double click the Other Linker Flags, nothing happens. However, the interstitials are showing up in my app despite my not following the above step. One more question do you have any idea why the interstitials are showing in my emulator but not on my iphone?

Ok so i was successful in adding the -all_load -ObjC in the Other Linker Flags. Everything works flawlessly on my simulator. However still no ads show up on my iphone. Any idea why its so. Or is it that the ads will show up only after the app is available for download on appstore after the release?

@Sandeep.. with the new sdk I could not get it to show up in the simulator at all.. I have used an older version because I wasn't sure if it worked and didn't want to be a guinea pig while losing out on money either. If you want an old version I have it.

@Mysps- Yes i have used the new sdk and ads showup only in simulator but not on device. I would be grateful if you send me old sdk. I can test it and if it works on my iphone i will use the old one. My mail add:- sandeepkurne @ gmail (dot) com.

I've been searching for some help with this and came across your post so figured i might as well give it a shot and see if anyone can help me out. I've successfully implemented Applovin interstitial ads and they were working fine until I added a Revmob banner ad to the bottom of the app as well. Now, the Applovin interstitial ad actually loads up WITHIN the banner area of the Revmob ad. I'm sure this is an easy fix that I'm just completely missing. Do you have some insight about how to get the ad back to full screen view? here is the code I'm using to load the interstitial: #import "ALInterstitialAd.h" [ALInterstitialAd showOver:[[UIApplication sharedApplication] keyWindow]]; and the revmob ad: [[RevMobAds session] showBanner]; thanks in advance.

hi akshay, U need clicks to earn revenue not impressions. and sometimes click doesn't mean just clicking ads but installing them too. If all this is done then u r ready to earn.. I will recommend u to socialize your app even more..
