Hi @ridgerock, Awesome that you got it! I'm sure tons of people could benefit from a detailed set of instructions, if you were so inspired to write it up! I know I would appreciate it! Mark

That's Great. I have been trying to do the same from days for my android apps but failed. I contacted their support but with their technical replies and delay in respond made me drop the idea for the timing. It would be great if you could put all the steps together in simplified form.

I have reached out to Parse both to see why more characters do not show and why you can't direct the user to the app or page when you hit the notification. Their response is that the OS on Android phones do not allow it. Hopefully, that can be fixed soon.

Hi Guys in my attempt to sort out the push notification using Parse, I managed to get technical support directly from Parse only to get this message from them after they requested I send my xcode project to them, their reply is below: I think there's something wrong with the BuzzTouch project. It's not picking up our framework. Can you ask on their forums? We don't officially support it. So its all on you Ridgerock I'm afraid.

Hi Ridgerock I have follow your integration process step by step with no errors but still unable to get any push, everything is where it should be, I have setup my push service in the developers center, redone my provisioning certificate, successfully added my .P12 to Parse, but still nothing. When I do my build and launch app should I get the allow push notification on the app? as I do not get this. Just cannot understand why it isn't working for me.

Hey Dragon007 You should be asked to register for push when your app is launched. Have you signed your app with the new provisioning profile? Also go into notification on your phone and make sure it did not silently sign up for notifications. Also check the data portion of Parse to see if there has been any installations. I have had the same problem but it has always been an Apple provisioning issue. If none of this works maybe you can send me your code and I can see if I see anything.

I think I've pasted everything in the right place but now I'm hung up on the test thing. Whenever I hit the 'test' button on the Parse site it keeps telling me that no data has been received yet. I take it that the rest of the tutorial depends on this test working?

Hi Ridge I have finally got the Push going (I think), problem I'm having is no push messages are coming through. When I launched the app I get the push message to allow push notification for the app, I then signed into Parse to send message and can see that I have one subscriber, so I guess this means its all connected but when I send a test message I get nothing. Is there anything I should know or be doing? does the message take a while to come through? Just not sure what to expect. Any suggestions will be helpful. Thanks

@ag - No it doesnt. I actually skipped the test part because it was extra work of putting things in and taking them out. Send a push and see what happens. Also see if you have installations under the data browser in Parse. If you do then you did it right. @dragon007 - that's weird. If it subscribed you should be ready to go. The pushes normally come through instantly.

Success! (Kind of.) I now get the notifications from Parse but when I tap them in my phone, they disappear instead of opening. I might have to take it to Parse from here. Thanks for the tutorial, though, Ridgerock. There's no way I would've even got as far as I did without it. If I could send beer to you through the internet, I would.

@Ag- when you mean go away do you mean nothing happens or when you click launch it takes you to your app? Because it should take you straight into app if the app is closed or if it is open it should pop up then go away when you tap your opt if your in the app you will stay. Swap your device notification it should still be there. Put finger on top of screen and swipe down should still be in there. Good luck I had issues for so long until ridges doc and I was up and going in 5 mins when I read his doc. Stick with it!!!

Well, I'm using a Galaxy S2 and when I send a push notification, my phone lets me know I've received a new message but I don't see anything until I pull down my notifications window from the top (I'm not sure if that's the right terminology for it). I can see my app logo and name in the notifications section but when I tap it or swipe it, it just vanishes. It doesn't take me to any message or into my app or anything. I've sent about four test messages but I've not been able to read any of them. I dunno what you mean by swap your device notification. Are the messages supposed to pop open in some kind of window or something for reading? And are they cached in the device somewhere? I've sent an email to Parse, asking about it but answers tend to come quicker and simpler from the Buzztouch forums.

Hi Ridge I'm afraid I'm still struggling to get the Push service going and Parse are of no help what-so-ever. Although in Parse control panel I have a subscription and the test Data was successful , I have no installation of my push service shown in the Data Browser, so I'm guessing I have done something wrong, but I have no idea what. I have tried going through the process many times from scratch but still no luck and I guess I'm hoping you may have a tip or solution as I'm totally out of ideas to get it working; such a pain, its so depressing.

When I contacted Parse about the notifications disappearing when they've been tapped, I received this reply: "Clicking on the notification in the status bar should start up the Activity from which you called PushService.subscribe, but it *won't* do anything else by default (like displaying the message inside your app's Activity). If you need to display the contents of the notification to a user, you should use a BroadcastReceiver and fire a custom Action as described in the Android guide at https://parse.com/docs/android_guide#push-receiving -- this will let your app capture the data in the notification and display it to the user. You can also read more about notifications at http://developer.android.com/guide/topics/ui/notifiers/notifications.html and create your own notification inside this BroadcastReceiver if you need more advanced interaction between the status bar and your app. Because there are so many bells and whistles associated with the NotificationManager, it's tough for us to provide non-basic notification features in our SDK without having a lot of feature creep, but we're looking at ways to make this process simpler in the future." Now, I'm not exactly sure what this guy is talking about when he talks about 'clicking on the notification in the status bar'. The only place I see the notification is in the pull down notifications page on my Galaxy S2. It doesn't show up anywhere else. I'm not sure if that's what he means by the status bar but I've not heard it called that before. (To be fair I've not heard it called the 'notification page' either but I dunno what else to call it.) I would expect to be able to read the message at this point without any further action but if my interpretation of what this guy is saying is even close, he's saying that in order to read the messages, I have to do more? If anyone can interpret this guy's developer-speak and translate into layman's terms, that would be great. In fact, someone should develop an app for that. Also, if it's not out there already, somebody needs to invent an app where you can virtually smash your head against a brick wall. It could be called the app builders' app.

Hey, Ridgerock, I had a question about the Parse iOS integration. (I'm also hoping to resuscitate what appears to be a dead thread.) I got as far as the test portion for the iOS on Parse's website and the test worked for me. But their integration tutorial just stops there after step four. Where do you find the rest of the steps and the necessary code in your tutorial? I recognize that it comes from the Parse website but where does one find it? I assumed that if the test was successful that it would somehow unlock the rest of the steps but it didn't. If I can't find the answer here I'll try asking Parse directly but it's usually quicker and easier to find things here.

Hi Ridge I wanted to add parse to my Android project, but can't seem to get past the beginning stages of your tutorial as I cannot find the 'Package Explorer' button in Eclipse and when I right click on the jar file I don't see an option to select 'Build Path'. I'm using a Mac so not sure if your tutorial is for both Mac & PC. If you or anyone else can point me in the right direction, it would really help.

Another question, what does it mean by: 'Call Parse.initialize fom your onCreate methods' in Eclipse as I don't understand this bit and cannot spot the onCreate methods. Can anyone help here.

Hi guy's with the push service on android using Parse, should I get a prompt to accept push on an android device? I'm not sure as I use an iphone and my android device I got recently for testing, so don't really get how it should work. I followed Ridgerock's integration guide and it appears I have done everything right and it shows as installed in the Data Browser but I don't get any push message when I send. Can anyone shed some light on this, have I missed something?

It's been my experience, having gotten the notifications to work on both platforms, that they don't work the same. (This could have something to do with the way I've integrated it.) The iOS ones look slick and they show up in their own little window and when I tap them they take me to my app. The Android ones just show up in the notification bar and when I tap them, they disappear. Also, the Android ones were showing up right after being sent but now they sometimes don't show up until hours later. But, as I said, that might have something to do with the way I integrated them. Maybe I did something incorrectly. Here is another tutorial about Broadcastreceiver classes in Android. It's not Parse specific but might still help. http://www.vogella.com/articles/AndroidBroadcastReceiver/article.html

I can't believe I'm still the only person here who is still struggling to get the push service going on both Android and iOS, this has been the most depressing part of my learning since getting involved in app development. I think I have reached the stage where I want to give up, I have spent months on this and got nowhere.

Thank you for that tutorial! Thank you! I do have a question. How do you set up REST account/app/program (I know I am saying this wrong) for a client so they can upload their own Push notifications. ****UPDATE I have followed the exact same steps that I used to get Push (Parse 1.0.41 not 1.0.47 the newest iteration) up and running on my test app on my current Apple App store app. I can NOT receive the push notifications. The app complies fine. Under Settings >> Notifications >> the app shows up as able to receive all types of notifications and on the parse website every time I run my the app on a device and it installs it shows up. This is killing me. Thank you BT community!

Hi @ridgerock, I just wanted to say that I just managed to get push notifications working on my Android app and I would not have achieved it without your pdf guide, so many many thanks for taking the time and effort to do that. I did have one problem - my app crashes whenever my device wakes (a zte blade smartphone), with the following :- ‘Sorry! The application myapp (process com.myapp) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again. It does this every time the phone is woken. In your pdf, you have a line in the android manifest <action android:name="android.intent.action.USER_PRESENT" /> I have found a work-around that I don't understand, as I found it by trial and error, but if I comment out that one line of code, all is good and the push still works. I have no idea why!

My contribution is miniscule by comparison, but I am happy to share. I'm interested to know, did the problem I had affect anyone else?

I had a go at the rest api, as I would like a form on a website that a user can enter text in and when they click submit, the text content ends up as a push notification. I think I understand the principle of how to do this in theory. In practice, if you know how to make a form in php that can use cURL, it should be possible. Sadly, I don't. Alan

Did you read the description on YouTube? There was a step that I did not record. Sorry. Let me know....or send me a screen capture of the code and I will look at it tonight! [email protected]

@bakkmo I emailed you the revised source code....simple syntactical error! All is good.....I also changed the build version setting to get rid of all the "depreciation errors" App looks great so far! Keep us posted!

I don't think you are running the code I sent you.....I emailed you just the block that you need to replace....also I would recommend that you place all your frameworks in the same folder. I noticed that you do not have push notifications setup for iOS within your provisioning profile. You may want to watch the tutorial again as I explain how to do that.
