Google Map Keys v1 - Five Days Left!

Hello, In case you aren't aware, Google deprecated their Google Maps Android v1 API keys back in December, and they are set to stop giving away these API keys on March 3, 2013. That means if you are going to use maps in your Android app, and until buzztouch updates their code for the v2 API, you'll need to grab a key FAST! In order to do this, you'll want the MD5 fingerprint of the release keystore you'll sign your app with, and then head to this link to get your key: https://developers.google.com/maps/documentation/android/v1/maps-api-signup After March 3rd, no more keys will be issued. Existing keys will still work for quite some time, but if your app doesn't support the v2 API, and you don't have a key, you won't be able to get maps to work. Mark

Does this mean that if I make an Android app with maps in, it won't work? (after March 3rd) If so, that's not great, because I have no plans currently to make Android, but I would like to put my app on Google sometime, and that has maps.

I believe you will be fine Annandale. GoNorthWest, am I right in thinking you can use the same MD5 finger print for many apps?

You guys are both right! You can use the same release key for multiple apps, and that release key, and its MD5 fingerprint, can generate a maps key that can be used for multiple apps. The only requirement for it to work is that the key that was used to generate the map key be the same key used to sign the app. Current keys (and those generated before March 3) will work for quite a while. However...come March 3, if you don't already have a maps key, you won't be able to get one. And that means no map functionality in your app until buzztouch implements the v2 API (which they're working on). So, you have 5 days to create a generic release key and get a maps key for future use!

Yeah, it kinda snuck up on us all, I think! I went through my current release keys last night and made sure I have maps keys for all of them. Then I created another generic release key that I can use for future apps, and created a maps key for that. So, I should be covered!

I get it now! So if I don't grab an API key now, I'll have to wait until David and his team come up with v2 API. I'm in no rush to get onto Android, so this isn't much of a problem. I just thought that I wasn't going to be able to use Android with Google Maps, but it turns out I was wrong (thank god!)

Yep, @Annandale, you should be good good until David gets v2 integrated. I know he's working on it now.

Anyone whois having doesn't know what a MD5 fingerprint is or how to get one,the easiest way is to install the Keytool plugin for Eclipse. Open Eclipse Click on Help tab Click on Install New Software Enter the following url: http://keytool.sourceforge.net/update Select Add Name it Select OK and follow the instructions from there. Once you restart Eclipse you will see a Key icon on your tool bar, click the icon to create a Keystone. It will have the MD5 fingerprint displayed after the keystone has been generated. If you don't have Eclipse you can go to: http://keytool.sourceforge.net/ and download a self-contained version. I am not sure if the self-contained version is iso compatible or not.

Glad I could help, everybody! Here's a video I did some time ago on how to install and use the Eclipse Keytool Plugin. It works for the current ADT Bundle as well. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IaXE2FUENFI Mark
