Migrated from Godaddy to Hostgator - All my apps are gone.

I recently changed my host from Godaddy to Hostgator. Hostgator migrated all my files yesterday and today i reinstalled my cp with 3.0. selfhost package. The installation went on smoothly as expected. But now i am not able to see either other users and the apps i created earlier on my self hosted cp. During the process i had to create a new SQL Database on my Hostgator (old one is still on Godaddy for next one week). Other than that i have installed selfhost more than 5 times so no room for error in it. I am in need of serious help from more experienced guys here on the forum. Any instructions would be really helpful.

Driving..... Back up that database if you already haven't. Guys will jump in, as you know. Will come back when I get to office. Back it up, back it up and back it up.

@MacApple- Thanks for your words. I have already backed up all the files yesterday before migrating to Hostgator.

Good man. You'll be OK, trust me. So you did try wiping out the new install and doing again? Did similar to yourself recently but left a lot of apps on GD and only migrated one across. I'll see if I can get PSMDanny to jump in when I stop.

Your words really help me keep myself sane. I have tried deleting complete btserver folder from my host and again reinstalling it from the scratch (just the files folder was from the backup). Did it 2 times and same result.

Can you create a new app on Hostgator? Can you create a new user? Can you certify that the entire structure of Buzztouch is transferred verbatim to the new host? Especially the files folder? I had this problem once when I opened a new database for an upgrade of self hosted, instead of entering the data for the existing database. This may not be applicable to your case since the old database is on GoDaddy, still... Have you considered Chris1's new plugin for copying apps -- available on buzztouchmods.com I believe?

@Dusko- Yes i can create new app and add new user on Hostgator. Before installation, i had made sure that the migration process was correct on the new host. Chirs' plugin is a good idea but i will opt it as a last option. Also am not sure whether i can add new screens and / or delet existing screens from the app created with that plugin.

When you have a look at your database through phpMyAdmin, do you see all 12 tables that are needed for proper operation of BT software. The first is bt_api_keys, the last is bt_users. Do you see all of them in place on Hostgator? Can you compare the tables from GoDaddy against their counterparts on Hostgator? -------------- Also, did the domain you use on Hostgator propagate properly all over the Internet? It usually takes two days and sometimes even longer for all the Internet to see the change in DNS servers, addresses and the like.

@Dusko- Yes are correct saying it takes upto 2 days to propagate the domain all over the internet. But i think the problem i am facing is due to the reason that i created new database instead of adding the older one from godaddy. I also now realised that what MacApple asked me in his first post. I am now backing up the database file from godaddy. Its taking longer that i thought...

You certainly have to create a new database on Hostgator and then you have to export the tables from GoDaddy to your local machine, then go to phpMyAdmin in Hostgator cPanel and import the entire database at once. Only then will you have data needed for apps to operate. Backing up database is one thing, and it is necessary for security reasons. However, what you now need is to download sql files in order to transfer BT data from one server to another.

@Sandeep, if you get really stuck, I would suggest PSMDanny as a good guy to reach out to. He looks after installations on the core team. Alan

I'd talk with one of the hostgator engineers, and ask for assistance in restoring your backup. If you backed it up the 'standard' way, then you should have a text file that ends in *.sql, if so, it's really just a text file with the database table/field information. Providing that you haven't changed the core 'naming' of the database, it should be relatively easy to 'import' your backup and restore your data. The cool thing is, since this is a 'new' database, if you do make a mistake, it's no big deal to wipe it and start again. The SQL Script should be studied to make sure it doesn't wipe out any existing data; just augments the existing database by inserting your old data... And like everyone is saying; you can always get Danny to help, and that will be that. Good Luck! Cheers! -- Smug

Did you make sure the database is "localhost". On GoDaddy it is usually a web URL, but with Hostgator, it is a local database? Jake

Hello everyone, Sorry i had to leave the conversation last night since it was too late here. @Dusko- For some odd reason, the database i am trying to back up from GD is showing pending backup status since last night. The first thing i did today was to contact Hostgator staff and asked whether they are able to back up my db's from GD. They said they can do so. I have now sent them a request to take a backup of my db's. @Smug- I did create a new core db with a different db name and different password. I think i should create a new database with the old name (the one that was on GD). But i think i will have to wait till i get reply from HG. @Jake- Yes the db i set while new installation was set to localhost. @AlanMac- Yes Danny is there. But if everything goes correctly, i think i dont need to bother him. @MacApple- I am sure my problem would be sorted out quickly. You guys are all amazing. I am amazed how you all jump to support me in such a difficult time. BT Community Rocks.!

I just saw that my db on GD was successfully backed up on my old server. I cannot believe the size of the db, its about 49 mb in size. That explains why it was taking long to get it backed up. Now that i have the backup file at hand, can anyone tell me how do i port it on my HG server?

You could try to contact the support from Hostgator. They should be able to do that for you. My only concern is that you are now having a BACKUP file of your database. That probably is not what you are needing now. The easiest way would be to export your entire BT database to your computer. That should be a file with extension of .sql. You then import that into Hostgator using phpMyAdmin icon from the cpanel of your site. If you need more help, do let me know.

Yes, i have already downloaded the db file on my mac. Also i have opened phpMyAdmin on my cp. However i am a bit confused here. I have clicked the import tab and navigated the path to my sql db. Should i keep other values to default or i need to change other values too. Like- 1. Number of rows to skip, starting from the first row: (default is 0), 2. SQL compatibility mode: (default is NONE),

Also should i create a new blank db in which i need to import this downloaded db or i can just import the db and it will show up as a new (separate) db?

Ok guys, i have a good news for you all. At last on second attempt of importing the db i managed to get the db merged in the new db i created earlier on my new host server. On my first attempt i kept all the default value the same but i got db error. On my second attempt i changed the value of SQL compatibility mode: to ANSI and the db was imported successfully. After this i logged in to my cp and now i see all my apps in place. I cannot thank you all enough for all your help, suggestions and ideas on solving this problem. I was really worried but i consider myself very lucky that i belong to a community where everyone jumps in to lend a supportive hand to those who are needy. Thanks a lot... :)

OK, great. All's well that ends well! Oh, if you asked the HG support to transfer the database for you, you should probably tell them that they do not need to do that anymore. And another oh... now that you have everything in order, now is a great time to create your first site backup!

I was thinking of backing up my server but right now its already midnight here. It will be the first thing i will be doing it tomorrow morning. I also learned a lesson that only backing up server is not enough, you need to backup your db as well ( i was not aware about this earlier ). Yes, i still have to inform the HG support about stopping the db transfer. I almost forgot that. Thanks for reminding me about it.

Glad to hear that you are sorted out, Sandeep. Phew! But you feel better now! I have been thinking about moving my apps from godaddy to HostGator. At the moment, my apps have content in files that I have uploaded to GoDaddy. The apps then load the content from those files. Surely, my apps will continue to try to load content from those files on GoDaddy if I moved them to HostGator? So, you have to re-upload all your files for each app once you've made the move. Is that correct? John

You would basically need to recreate all facets of your app on your new hosted server… Then after duplicating all resources and the app, submit a new version to the appropriate marketplaces (google, Apple, etc…) 1) Create new Infrastructure. 2) Duplicate your resources on the new Infrastructure. 3) Submit updates using resources from the new Infrastructure. 4) Remove old resources from the old infrastructure. After acceptance and publishing, remove your old setup from Go Daddy. but if you do it before, all of your apps that are 'in the wild' without a new config, will still be looking in the old (godaddy) place. Cheers! -- Smug

Hi, Smug. You are a hero! That all sounds like a huge amount of hassle so I will be staying with GoDaddy. By the way, I've just discovered your multi-file upload tool. Awesome piece of kit. It is saved me a lot of time and I am most indebted to you.

I have been considering switching my hosting supplier, and I will definitely will be better prepared than I would have been. As an aside, a few people seem to have switched to Hostgator. Is there anything about them that we should know?

It's a hassle. I'm not sure how 'huge' it would be. Certainly would have been a bit of a challenge last month. But with the advent of Chris1's App Copy script, and maybe some judicious use of Stobe's snippet keeper, it might not be as bad as you think. The bottom line is 'recreate your server somewhere else'. If your server is loaded with projects, then some care and preparation is definitely in order. I'm no fan of Go Daddy, but still the rule applies: If it's not broke, don't fix it. So if you don't have a reason to leave Go Daddy, you may as well stay. Thanks for the kind words on the upload tool. If you have any questions, just yell! Cheers! -- Smug

Alan: I'm still with Network Solutions… But a lot of folks have been migrating to Hostgator when their current contracts are expiring. I think it has to do with a responsive tech support crew that understands BT… Issues like Push and other sundry details seem to be readily attended to. I'm still pretty happy with where I am, for the most part. But I've heard nothing but good about hostgator from the people who've moved. Cheers! -- Smug

I am with Hostgator for five or six years by now. Their support is probably the best there is. Whatever it is, they fix it. They regularly run security checks and catch viruses if they happen on the server. So yeah, I continue hosting with them and have no plans to switch to anywhere else.

I sent them a message via ticket system asking them to open the ports for outbound connections to APN. Actually i found this in one of the old forum post by Niraj Shah. Following is the message i sent them:- Subject: Enable ports for outbound communications with Apple Push Notification Service Hello Sir, Could you please enable the following ports for outbound communications with Apple Push Notification Service? 443 2195 2196 5223 Also, could you check the Firewall whitelist for my domain of wordbox.net.in to ensure communications with Apple's IP Block of 17.0.0.0/8 is allowed. Thanks and kind regards. Sandeep. /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// Following was their reply:- Greetings, I have opened the outbound port 443, 2195,2196 and 5223 in the server as per your request. Further, I checked and found that IP range 17.0.0.0/8 is allowed in the server. If there is anything else we can assist you with, please let us know. Warm regards,
