Edit Excel Document

Hi guys/girls, Is it possible to display an excel document as a screen, and the user can edit fields? I have a spreadsheet with equations and calculations related to aviation, and id love for it to be available on iPhone/ipad. Im sure many pilots would agree too. Thanks, Jeremy

AFAIK, you can't directly edit excel spreadsheets from within (the current) app environment. I imagine to get the functionality you desire out of this kind of thing, you may want to make a custom plugin... Either with lookup tables or methods that calculate the values needed. Or both. I started getting into it after watching David's video on how to make a plugin. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OJrMVTn8z0s I had to pause/rewind a few times; it's rather brisk. But it really shows how simple it can be to put together a rather decent plugin. It's not as hard as you might think. In a nutshell, you'd create a new plugin in your control panel (BT hosted control panel, not self hosted control panel). Import it into your self hosted (or place it into a project in your BT control panel) and basically build a quickie app for plugin development. Then, download your package. Open the class files for your 'new' plugin, and with the new found knowledge from David's video, add a couple of XIB files into your project (or XML if working with Android), connect them to your class, and start the design of your screen. Then create the methods that would do the calculations when the users presses a button, or whatever your design calls for. It's a step above normal, but not insurmountable. And stop by the forums with questions! Cheers! -- Smug

Hi Smug, I dont have self hosted anymore as i had too many issues and i ended up raging at it after a long time of trying, and cancelled domains and hosting. Can i send you the spreadsheet that i want up so that you can see what it is im trying to do?

If you don't mind, put it in a dropbox somewhere and send me a link to it. :) Cheers! -- Smug

The easiest method is to use Google Drive. Make a spreadsheet in there. Then make an input form. Then use the URL with your mobile device and Safari or Android Browser. Notice how Google had automatically mobilized that form? Then use that URL for the Custom URL plugin within your BuzzTouch app. All form inputs will be saved as a new row into that Google spreadsheet. Wufoo.com is another form utility. -- Niraj

I have used an Excel add-in called WebWorksheet that will take an Excel spreadsheet and convert in into HTML5 code. It worked great for me, allows input fields, pulldowns, formulas, etc. It is about $50 US but was well worth it for me. It can be found at www.webworksheet.com

Nice find, Warren! Also, nice to see you again on the forum :-) Have you tried putting the HTM file into a BuzzTouch app for the HTML doc screen (plugin)? -- Niraj

I have, in two of my apps - a contact form in one, and a payment calculator in another. Both work well.

@Niraj Can you pm me how to do that? I have no idea how to work the google forms with a spreadsheet. @Warren Nice find indeed! I dont suppose youd consider converting my small spreadsheet into working html for me to use in buzz touch? Not sure if i want or can afford to invest $50 in what is probably going to be a free app. Thanks guys!

Take a crack at the Google Docs, Drive and Forms. I too have not made one from scratch by myself. Others around me have done it and then showed me the end results. I do know that it works. :-) Let us know on this post when you release the app! -- Niraj

@Niraj I tried, but I need something in the format of an excel sheet. Google forms couldn't do it

Just been reading this thread about WebWorkSheet and wondered if you could give me a little more information about embedding the result in an app We have a similar product (spreadsheetconvertor) which does the same job and creates an html file - BUT It also creates extra files to go with it (assets folder and a .git folder which will be images and css files etc) Is webworksheet the same or does it create just a simple one page html file? I ask as I don't know, being a total newbie to apps and buzztouch, how to use those files in a buzztouch app I know I can host the files, and use the URL plugin to access the html file. But that means the app will not work offline. Using an HTML plugin can I also upload to the app the associated files Any hints?
