The iPhone 5. Will it be good with Buzztouch!

Hi guys, I wasvwatching the keynote for the new iPhone 5. What a machine. Since my iPhone was stolen last week, I may have to get one of these. Unless someone as a spare 4S around, I will just save up and get the iPhone 5 Anyway, what drew my eye was the 4 inch Retina Display. I'm not bothered about the Retina, but the 4 inch bothers me a lot. The screen has been sized up, but not in proportion to the previous iPhones. Now, I did watch the Keynote and it does say that it doesnt matter, because it will be centered with margins. But I would like to use this space to build extra things. I know that the iPhone is so new that even Pre-Orders haven't started yet. But do any of the Buzztouch gang have plans for extending the screen size.

I did see that they said all your apps work just fine on the new iPhone 5. Not sure you will be able to use the additional real estate or not.

I don't think that any of the plugins are compatible with it yet. And there probably won't be until people start to get the physical device.

The device has to be downward compatible or nothing would run on it. If you develop in the same environment as you do now and say its IOS 5 then it should be fine. Of course you wont be using any new features that ios 6 provides.

One good thing about a new iPhone launch is that it is good for App sales. When a new iPhone comes out the previous ones drop in price dramatically and bring a whole new set of App Store connected phones as new adopters grab the 4 or 4s at a heavily discounted price that wouldn't ordinarily have made the plunge. They say each new iPhone has seen sales figures of all the previous incarnations combined. New iPhone on market is good for all us crazy cats on Buzztouch me thinks. Christmas, Thanksgiving (other holidays are available) and iPhone launches = dollars in pocket.

Good discussion here. When the original iPad came out, our apps were promised to 'work' too. They did, sort of. Zooming in with a 2x button was lame but did bridge the gap. LOL. The new screen size does mean new opportunity, and headache, for developers. No doubt about that. Some of the existing plugins are very sensitive to the screen size, others not so much (think content, menus, buttons, etc). I can imagine some improvements for some of the plugins already. I can also imagine a few that would need nothing...it all depends. I'm stoked about the release but also a bit let down. Let down because I'm used to getting excited (in a nerd kinda way) to see what they have done next. I didn't see much in way of innovating so I was a bit bummed. But...there's no doubt that this is an impressive computer - amazing actually. I'll never forget being at MacWorld a bunch of years ago (2007 I think) and seeing this crazy phone in a glass case spinning in circles with white light on it...I couldn't help but thinking.... "OK, 10,000 possibilities, three developers, I wonder who will solve that problem.. Apple, Google, Adobe, me? " Can't wait for iOS 6. Can't wait to get Mountain Lion running smooth (my primary machine is super slow since the upgrade) can't wait to make stuff and break stuff and help more folks figure this crazy thing out. #1 Nerd. Out.

^ love it. one of these days we'll have an event and you'll be up there in jeans announcing something cool. You are an innovator. keep innovating. does seem to be a lot of articles today about lack of 'awe' on the 5. I didn't see it, but I'm not going to be jumping and using iOS6 anytime soon. still want to make apps compatible for series 3 devices, still a huge market. making older plugins more compatible with the 5 is not just going to be going into code and changing the size of the view/CGRect? I am interested in a 4S's that BT folks might be selling that are on the AT&T network @ $200. Craigslist was just slammed this AM with them...

View / Rectangle (frames), yup...that's all this is. The new screen is taller and but no wider which changes the proportion of full screen graphics. For some apps and some developers this will be problematic, other not at all. Think "precisely designed" or "content centric." Content type apps will probably not change much (views get taller and scroll vertically less but otherwise it's the same thing) but specially crafted, and highly creative apps that use lots of artwork and other graphics will surely need re-configured. My vote: The FCC and telcos around the world allow different screen sizes, as large or as small as phone manufacturers want, with ONE rule. They must all be SQUARE screens. Ha, that would solve boatloads of issues for tons and tons of folks. Laughing...looking forward to the next huge innovation.

now I'm scared that CGrect sizes is exactly what I was thinking when i was reading articles on new screen size... if that's all then this does not seem like a big deal if you don't mind editing code. If/when the ipad mini drops, are we gonna have 4 screen sizes for IDevices? (and we gripe about android) I'm even more afraid of myself after I just hacked up the Parse framework this morning to deal with ARC on older devices AND made it work... #1 Nerd fan!

Will BT1.5 & 2.0 ever be able to use the additional real estate on the iPhone 5's screen?

Does anyone have the solution to using maps in i0S 6? Previously, all mapping features (find my office) were keyed to Googlemaps. Now, none are functioning. Has anyone addressed this with their app yet? Thank you--

@Lady Chantico Skky: As far as we can tell, Maps is working as expected with the exception of "driving directions" which now seems to direct folks to Google maps using safari. Not ideal but not surprising. We're working on updating a bunch of plugins to support iOS 6. If you're using the older v1.4 or v1.5 versions of buzztouch we won't be doing changes for you or automatically, it's not possible.

David, I been using v1.5 since it was in beta. to have it running on iOS6 do I need to re-design the whole thing with v2? Could we have ;like a copy app design to upgrade from lower versions to the current one?

Well I've been working with 1.5 for quite some time now. I would like to get apps upgraded to v2.0 without rebuilding the app. If its not possible, I'll wait until its mandatory to move up.

@Q84Ever: Apple's decides if older, existing apps will run on iOS 6. I suspect they will run fine but not as good as they could? Just hunch. Every new operating system release brings new features, functions, and options for app owners and phone users. The highest quality apps and the most successful app owners will embrace these changes and update their apps accordingly. Depending on the nature of the app and the expectation of end users, it may be worth it to implement some changes, it may not. Tough to say. There isn't a "copy app design to upgrade from lower versions to the current one" (as asked by @Q84Ever) for a bunch of reasons. Several folks have tried to implement something like this in the past but it's never worked well and always caused more troubles and questions, and issues that it was worth. This challenge is not related to the way iOS works, it's related to all sorts of options that you may or may not be using in your control panels, the relationship between each type of screen (now called plugins) and the differences in how v1.4, v1.5, and v2.0 are assembled. In some ways they are very similar, in others, very different.

Something just got me wondering about the original question. All Android devices have different screen sizes. You've got some 4.7 inch ones, and a few 2.5 inch ones. I remember myself having a Motorola Flipout (pathetic), with a tiny screen size. I sold that and moved on to an iPhone (which got stolen). But anyway, back on topic, Android have different screen sizes, so why can't the iPhone 5 be just the same.

@Annandale Apps: Exactly! Android devs have been struggling with the (working around it) concept of different screen sizes for a long time. Some don't mind it, some hate it. I think more than anything the iPhone 5 will just mean "longer" content (vertically) and most apps, except apps with very precisely positioned elements, like games, will be just fine. In a few months we'll all look back at this time of change and giggle a bit. It may be stressful and confusing for all of us app developers to keep up with it all but don't lose sight of the single most important concept (in my mind)....CHANGE IS GOOD. When Apple and Google and others innovate, it forces us to innovate. If we stop innovating and learning and changing, the entire ecosystem will stall and nobody will benefit. Really, making software for devices that never changed would lead to a hum-drum, boring, not fun and commoditized market. Commoditizing apps is not good for anyone, especially people that make the software like you and me and tons of others. So, the next time you're at a meetup, on a forum, or anywhere else talking mobile...and somebody starts whining or complaining or moaning about "all the changes" do the right thing and remind them that change is good (it's hard as heck for a short period time but good overall) and without it none of us would have any long term opportunity. I'm in this for the long term and don't mind a bit if the devices evolve every now-and-then :-)
