Cubbyholes -- new plugin!

Some of you may have been referring to this as the "super bowl plugin". It was demonstrated at the San Diego Buzzday within the Super Bowl app that Ed Reyes and I had created. The proper name is now Cubbyholes. The plugin allows you to put information onto the screen in any location, even overlapping another cubbyhole! You can put these types of items anywhere on the iPhone and iPad screen, and at any size: - Text labels - Scrollable text blocks - Images - HTML Each item can be tappable to take one to another screen within the App. Finally, you get to decide where things go onto the screen. No developer needed. Check out the Screenshots to get insight into the possibilities. Don't forget that the iPad is also your canvas. Picture 1 -- Custom layout with text, images and buttons https://www.buzztouch.com/files/plugins/NS_Cubbyholes/screenshots/screen02.jpg Picture 2 -- To the right of his picture, the plain text is scrollable. https://www.buzztouch.com/files/plugins/NS_Cubbyholes/screenshots/screen07.jpg Picture 3 -- To the right of his picture, it is a scrolling block of HTML code with hyperlinks https://www.buzztouch.com/files/plugins/NS_Cubbyholes/screenshots/screen04.jpg Picture 4 -- Once you have a layout defined, just re-use it by swapping out content. Use the localFile parameter to repeat layouts in different JSON configuration files. https://www.buzztouch.com/files/plugins/NS_Cubbyholes/screenshots/screen03.jpg Picture 5 -- The red-colored items show the elements involved in the layout https://www.buzztouch.com/files/plugins/NS_Cubbyholes/screenshots/screen01.jpg Picture 6 -- Layout images in a pleasing manner, they wobble upon screen loading, a tap on each image takes you to a different screen within the app https://www.buzztouch.com/files/plugins/NS_Cubbyholes/screenshots/screen05.jpg Picture 7 -- The red-colored items show the elements involved in the layout https://www.buzztouch.com/files/plugins/NS_Cubbyholes/screenshots/screen06.jpg Whew! Enjoy the plugin! Be sure to share what cool screens you have created with it !!! :-) https://www.buzztouch.com/plugins/plugin.php?pid=9B9377C1CD78780457CD176 -- Niraj

Awesome Niraj! Can't wait to use it in my next app. Sounds like a great way to layout and create some excellent content screens. I have to resist tearing apart my app and rebuilding using CubbyHoles and Instant DB App- so I can wrap up version 1.0 ;) But v2.0 is another story. I definitely will be getting a copy :) Congrats!

Hey Niraj, Nice plugin. Are the buttons in image 1 configurable through cubbyholes or did you create them some other way? Do they link to other screens? Thanks Dave

@Dave -- either way works. You can make a button as a Cubbyhole by specifying the: - Position (x,y) - Size (height, width) - Title text - Border color - Border width - Border radius - Next screen to load on tap Alternatively, you can specify the Cubbyhole to display a pre-made image-as-a-button: - Position (x,y) - Size (height, width) - Image source (on-device or remote) - Next screen to load on tap Let us know when you have made your Cubbyholes! :-) -- Niraj

Hi Niraj, Great work, this plug-in will allow members like myself, who are new to app development, to produce professional looking applications. Thanks again, John

Awesome job Niraj, worth the wait !! Just want to confirm how does the positioning work with different size screens, currently there is a 3.5 and a 4 inch soon there could four different size iPhone screens by the end of the year. Similarly how does it work with iPad and iPad mini's? Just want to confirm before I spend $30 on a plugin that won't be usable across many devices. Cheers Kaybee

The screen layouts start from the upper-left corner of the screen, which is defined as X,Y: 0,0 Height-wise, for the iPhones, one should be mindful of the shorter iPhone 4 when doing the layout. I recommend sticking with a single iPhone orientation, portrait or landscape. Depending upon the complexities of your Cubbyholes and the layout, you might get unexpected results when switching orientations. :-) For the iPad, I recommend making a different app to take advantage of that screen real-estate. Of course, an iPhone app works fine on an iPad. I have made an iPad app for a Client in Landscape mode. It is nice to have so much screen space! I also implemented custom Cubbyholes in that app. Because of the complexity of the layout, we kept it in Landscape mode. Once you start using the Cubbyholes plugin, your creativity will increase. Be sure to share your Cubbyhole creations with us! -- Niraj

Just a quick tip regarding the iphone 4 versus iphone 5 height... I usually put a little something extra in the space not displayed with an iPhone 4, that isn't crucial to the app. You'll notice on my Universal Studios app, if you run it on an iPhone 5, you'll see "Quick Tips" and "Did You Know?" blurbs. These arn't visable on an iphone 4, but keeps the user from questioning the blank space at the bottom if using an up to date device. Apple seems to have no problem with this method at all, and it works well.

Niraj, Is there a minimum iOS version for Cubbyholes? I made a quick test app and got bunch of errors. Got late so I closed Xcode. I was running iOS 5. Probably something on my end but I thought that I would ask before bed. Thanks and goodnight Dave

The Cubbyholes plugin has only been tested with BuzzTouch V3 and on iOS 7. I will update the documentation soon. Thanks for noting that point. As stated by Apple, 87% of iOS devices are now running iOS 7. As a Developer, that makes our job easier. As a User, that can be frustrating for those still using iPad 1 or have kept their iPhone 4/4S on the older iOS versions. My wife is still on iOS 6 with her iPhone 4. I purposefully kept her on iOS 6 due to performance reasons. As with iOS 6.1, now iOS 7.1 has made things much better for iPhone 4 users. I will be upgrading her iPhone soon (after a backup :-) -- Niraj
