Where to host?

Any suggestions on which company to use for hosting or what is the alternative for self hosting? Thank you. Weidies

I have a VPS with Hostgator, for several years by now and it is what I would recommend for you too. At $49.99 per month it is not exactly cheap, but the ability to restart my own servers such as web server, email server, MySQL server etc. has saved me more times than I care to admit.

I have two accounts; Network Solutions and Hostgator. I'm slowly migrating from NS to Hostgator due to the high regard a lot of BT Self Hosters have for Hostgator, and my declining satisfaction with NS. They used to be the best, but over time and few sales, the bottom line seems to be overshadowing quality Tech Support. I vote Hostgator. I think I have some kind of low end business solution that ends up being about $150 a year or so; about the same as my NS account. Cheers! -- Smug

I remember there being port issues for things like Push Notification a little while back. Has that been resolved with self hosting? Or does it still depend on what the hosting provider has open? I would think this would be a significant factor in deciding on a hosting provider. Anyone have direct experience? William

On Hostgator VPS, I have access to everything and I can set these ports open the way I like. There is one set of ports for Google and the other one for Apple and you have to know them (because they may change in time). Regardless of the account you have, you can always initiate a chat session and ask the technician to set the ports open for you, and they will gladly do it. They say that this kind of service is what makes people go to Hostgator instead of GoDaddy or similar other sites.

I have had good luck with Hostgator, the Reseller Plan. The reseller plan has worked great because I can set up different cPanels for each client. Don't use GoDaddy, because push notifications won't work through them.

I use Arvixe.com. I use the Personal Class Pro Linux server, Unlimited Disk Space, Unlimited Domains, Unlimited email, unlimited data transfer, unlimited data base ... etc. I'm paying $198.00 for two (2) years. If you don't need to host unlimited domains, they have a plan that allows you to host up to six (6) domains. It cost around $98.00 for two (2) year. It has all of the other features as the Pro plan. They also have Business, VPS and reseller plans on both Linux and Windows servers. If you link back to them, you can get a 20% lifetime discount on renewing your services.

I should clarify that of course push notifications can work with GoDaddy, but you have to sign up for a Virtual Private Servers, which is much more expensive. So I moved everything I had to HostGator.

I use A2Hosting, it's fast, reliable and the support is great, and i have a self hosted buzztouch installed no problem. go have a look, and if you choose it go through this link: https://www.a2hosting.com/refer/44552 and use this code to get 51% off: 51FAST i generally buy it for 3 years at the time and i don't think i will be changing soon. Be careful for the unlimited stuff, there is never unlimited things. Usually the webspace is unlimited but the number of files are not.

I've contacted Hostgator and asked about the file limit, they call it Inode well they will not backup you files if you exceed 100000 files and you will be in trouble if you exceed 250000. http://support.hostgator.com/articles/pre-sales-policies/rules-terms-of-service/inode-limits While A2 also has this limit but they will stop backing up after 50GB and you have 300000 files limit. just to give you an example the self hosting i have on my server takes almost 7000 files, a average prestashop install takes 15000, an empty wordpress instal takes over 4000, this to let you know that this file limit is an important issue, on my server I'm now already using 280000 files.
